Dr Stoll,
I am an African American suffering from hypertension in excess of 20 years. I am 65 years old and quite active I jog three times a week. I have been treated by a Nutritionist, I take a lot of suppliments and avoid red meat I try to eat whole foods. My question to you is this. Is it because of my ancestry why it is so difficult to get my blood pressure under control? At present my doctor prescribed 10mg altace and tells me because being an african american I will need more medication. In the past I hafe been on some heavy duty meds but the side effects were terrible so I stop seeing the doctor and stop taking them. Incidentally I stopped seeing the doctor four years ago, but went back recently when I could not get it under control. I suffer from the dreaded "White Coat Sndrone". When I am in his office I am really scared consequently my pressure goes through the roof. This morning it was 167/110 it was much higher in his office. Sometimes it will go as low as 153/78. Otherwise I feel great. Any advise.

Do you take any magnesium? I've also heard that systemic enzymes can help high blood pressure.

check your blood pressure away from the white coat to see if it's significantly lower ( a lot of supermarket and department store pharmacies have a test your own blood pressure machine).
Gary Null recommends drinking half your weight in ounces of water- if you weigh 150 pounds drink 75 ounces of water a day to lower your blood pressure. A couple of diet doctors have said that losing as little as 10 % of your total weight can normalize your blood pressure, so, if you are at all overweight, try to reduce to see if it helps the blood pressure.
How you handle stress, of course, can make a difference in your blood pressure. Take time out to relax or exercise in a way you find enjoyable (like a favorite sport or walking with a loved one).
People of African descent are often blood type O and there's a theory that O's need more meat, less grains. See the book Eat Right for Your Type by Peter D'Adamo.

Hi Kitty Hawk,
Please read the article on the home page about Skilled Relaxation, and the entries in the glossary. Doing this practice would most likely greatly help your hypertension, and it is natural. There are also archives on Skilled Relaxation for more information.
One of my clients is a scientist and documented his BP rates when he started doing SR. He saw it drop and stay down by continuing doing the practice. He comes once a month for a relaxation massage, too.
You might consider getting some massage, too.
Best wishes,
Jan DeCourtney, CMT

Hi, Kitty.
Listen to Happygal, Ann & Number.
In my opinion, the hypertension/African American relationship is not genetic but caused by cultural rage due to racial oppression. Successful SR is even more effective in this situation.
Also, if your nutritionist has not suggested magnesium and omega 3 supplementation, you need to find a better one.
Let us know what you learn and how you do.
