Dr. Stoll, Is it really possible to have white coat syndrome. I had my yearly yesterday and I ALWAYS get anxiety over it. I monitored my pressure for 2 days prior to my appt. It was fine. About and hour before my appt. it was up to 140/95. In the office it was 155/105, but I was really nervous (sweating and shaking). They were quite concerned but I explained that I have been monitoring it and it was normal until the appt. After I got home it was back down to 128/85. This happened to me last year at the dentist when they took my pressure and it was normal when I got home. Do I need medication for high blood pressure or can this be normal? It really worrys me.

Shelly,
Its always best to take your BP at home, where you are relaxed. You are normal.

Shelly,
EXTREMELY common. So common that no physician should make the diagnosis of hypertension, and start treatment, prior to the patient keeping a record of their blood pressures at home for several weeks & having the physician peruse it.
It is true, though, that people with "white coat syndrome" tend to eventually develop true hypertension. Those people should take this as a warning to get busy with the things that prevent true hypertension.
