Interstitial Cystitis

Dr. Stoll,

I have been reading your website and have some questions. I have been a sufferer of IC for over ten years. I had relief for 5 years when I had a urologist dialate me regularly for 9 months. Now that he is retired, I have been going to someone else. He claims that dialation does not really work and that the theory of urine not leaving the bladder due to a constricted urethra is simply not true. He told me that they don't even teach this in medical school anymore. I don't know what to believe
I just want to be pain free. I have always believed the theory about a constricted urethra since I use to have very painful symptoms of kidney infections until I was dialated.
What direction should I go? Should I find a doctor that will dialate me and buy a book on relaxation techniques and practice them? Should I visit a TCM for some natural medicines?

Thanks,
Pam

Dear Pam,

I do not believe that medical schools no longer teach dilation for IC. This doc is just betting that you will not check out his statement. I will bet that, if he had IC, he would be dilating himself!

I agree that dilation is but a temporary relief. The fact that you had all of those in the past----and you still have the problem---should prove that to you.

I would find someone to do the dilations AND get real serious about the relaxation. As the relaxation works you will find that you need the dilations less & less till you need them no more. There have been several testimonials about this very thing & their IC, right here on this BB, within the past few weeks.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Dr. Stoll,

Thanks for the input. I have made an appointment with a new urologist that will do dialations.

What book would you recommend for the relaxation therapy? You have mentioned "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer". Is this the book I should purchase?

Thanks Again,

Pam Plaskoff

Dear pamp,

MAH, MAS is for you to understand how all this effects all of you. You will recognize yourself in this book many times.

HOWEVER, this is not the book to help you learn HOW to do this skill. There are many out there & many more being published every day. Go to the FAQ page for this 'site and read about skilled relaxation. The earlier editions of this reference are still available from your library and would be the best. Another that is pretty good is "The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson. MD (also available in your library).

Write with more questions. Once you get this skill under your belt, and have practiced it twice a day for 6 months, you will no longer have this problem.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
