IC antibiotics

Posted by NV on October 22, 1998 at 17:56:08:

Dear Dr. Stoll,

As you probably remember, I have chosen to do the skilled relaxation along with the antibiotics to get rid of my IC. For some reason, it just brings me a little more peace of mind coming at it from both angles. I sent away a urine sample to an independent lab who does broth cultures and they said it tested positive for strep viridans. When I took those results to my doctor here, he was extremely skeptical that that had anything to do with IC. He said that the strep varidans bacteria is usually found on the skin and is no big deal. So I wanted to know if it's possible to have an infection of strep viridans in the bladder or is it possible that my diagnosis was incorrect? Thank you.

Dear NV,

Normal urine is sterile. SO, the strep viridans is NOT "normal". However, your doc is correct in that it is a normal inhabitant of the surface of the body. Of course, E Coli is a normal inhabitant of the colon too. That doesn't mean it is a good thing to have in your eye.

The most likely source of this organism was not from growing inside of your bladder but as a contaminant from your skin while collecting it-----------UNLESS your specimen was collected directly from the bladder via catheter.

I agree with your doc that it has little to do with your IC.

More questions? Walt
