Dr. Stoll .......nerve damage in Interstitial Cystitis

Posted by JD on September 22, 2003 at 11:10:40:

Hi Dr. Stoll, I am a 26 year old male who's had IC/prostatitis symptoms now for probably about 15 months.(I was diagnosed with IC through cystoscopy/bladder hydrodystention last year)

Last year, I was having a lot of pain in the prostate area in addition to frequency, but luckily my pain has gone away after practicing SR over the past 7 months.

For 5 months I was very diligent about doing my SR twice a day, and then I kind of got out of the routine for a few months, like I would do it once a day during that time, but as I was feeling better I started partying more, and getting out of my diet...... well my pain is still gone, but my urinary frequency is back where it was.

Thank God I am not in pain, but this frequency aspect is still tough to deal with, sometimes I have to urinate every 45 minutes still.....not all time time but I usually have some moments like that every day, where I will urinate and within 10 minutes already feel some irritation there like I have to go again.

I have been doing my SR again for the past month twice a day, eating healthy, exercising most days, doing tai chi, all of those have already helped me, and I can pretty much always tell when I am tensing the muscles of my pelvic reigion.

But what about this urinary frequency.....do you think I have some sort of permenant nerve damage(neuropathic) of the bladder after 15 months?

One thing I have going for me, is I NEVER wake up in the middle of the night due to my IC, AND I am always symptom free when I wake up in the morning.

If I had permenant nerve damage of the bladder, I would guess that pain/frequency would be there all the time, but I am not in flares all the time, and I am always symptom when I wake up in the morning.

Plus, I have heard Urologists/Physical Therapists who specialise in Pelvic Floor Dysfunction say that the frequency aspect of IC takes longer to resolve than the pain, because the nerves are involved.

So what do you think? Is my frequency something that will go away over time if I continue to practice SR twice daily and live healthy? Is there any supplement I can take for nerve damage?(I currently take Perfect Food, 10 g a day Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil<----really helped my inflammation, and I recently started taking Primal Defense)

I basically practiced SR for 5 months in a row, got kind of off of it for 2 months, and am back on it again....I am thrilled to not be in pain anymore(the SR greatly helped with this) but really want to get rid of my frequency because it does interfere with me living a normal life.

Thanks!!
