urethal/bladder freq?? What's left??

I was originally dx with IC after a week of sudden bad pressure and frequency. The dx was made by excuding everything else, so I was told. Last year I had the hydrodistention and potassium test which were both negative. I attempted Dr Fugazottos antibiotic therapy after he found enterococcus but the ant's made me very sick, I then discovered the candida relation and have been taking diflucan and rotation grapefruit seed and olive leaf. I have always had moderate growths of candida in my vagina but my new gyno said my last cultures came back negative. I went off the diflucan and other naturals and withing 2 days had the urethral tingling and frequency back. I took a diflucan and spent the next day in bed sick. I felt like I had the flu. People were saying this is die off but I don't understand how 3 days of no anti-fungals could cause that much of an overgrowth and one diflucan could make me that sick with die off. The doctors say I don't have IC. There is something going on there. I am currently looking into a detox program of Dr Michael Biamonte and also food allergy and hormone testing. My questions are 1)can I still have yeast in my urethra without having any in my vagina? 2)Can I do the skilled relaxation without a physical therapist? There is not ont in my area that knows about this? Any tips on how I can heal myself? I feel like I have done everything.

Thanks Shyann

Hi Shyann,
Do you think it's possible that pelvic floor muscle tension is causing these symptoms? I also had IC and the symptoms I had (urgency, spasms) resulted from this. A few people have recommended a book called "A Headache in the Pelvis". I think it does a good job of explaining this phenomena.
Personally, I noticed that I was habitually tightening muscles in more than my pelvic floor. I also clenched my jaw, ground my teeth, tightened by shoulder muscles, tensed my leg muscles (particularly in my right leg), and had tight muscles in the area of my stomach (iliopsoas in particular). Do you notice anything like this?

Take care,
Daisy

Hi, Shyann.

Listen to Daisy. At least 99% of the SR, done in this country, is done with no more instruction than has been described on this website.

Hi Shyann,

I've had IC for 13 years, and I'm just starting to relax my symptoms by doing SR and self massage. It's amazing!

Definitely read A Headache in the Pelvis. It says what Walt says, only more comprehensively.

About your physical therapy question - I think that the SR is the key, but that it is very important to do some kind of physical therapy as well to help you unclench the pelvic muscles. I recommend The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies. It teaches you do do a lot of the physical therapy on yourself. For me, it is my psoas muscles that are the biggest contributor to the IC symptoms. The only drawback to the Workbook is that it doesn't cover the intrapelvic muscles, which have to be accessed by massaging in your vagina. You can do some of this yourself, but a physical therapist can do a better job.

Good luck!
Beth

Hi Shyann,

I'm reading a book that lists bladder frequency as a symptom of food allergy. Allergies and Candida with the Physicist's Rapid Solution by Prof. Steven Rochlitz, fourth edition, 2000, www.wellatlast.com. He has some unorthodox views, but I'm finding a lot of wisdom and help in the book.

Have you tried keeping a food diary to see if there is any connection to certain foods (or supplements)? In the past I've experienced urinary urgency and a little bout of incontinence from a multivitamin/mineral supplement I was taking. When I stopped, it stopped.

Wishing you the best,
Nutmeg

Daisy,

Yes, everything you said. I clench my jaw and always have my stomach pulled in and the muscles tight there. I do try to consciously relax my muscles as much as I can. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks for all the replies guys.

What kind of self massage do you do? Is the whole point to this to try and relax as much as possible or do i need to learn certain techniques?

Thanks,
Shyann

Hi Shyann,

I think Skilled Relaxation is the important part. I saw your other post asking how to do SR. A good way to start is to google the words "Progressive Relaxation". You'll get a bunch of hits that each describe different variations of this form of Skilled Relaxation. You squeeze and relax different muscle groups in turn.

As for the self massage, here is what I do. I take hot baths twice a day because they help relax your pelvic muscles. WHile in the bath, I lift one leg a little, reach behind, and pop my finger in my vagina. I pull back gently towards my bumhole, and I conciously try to relax my pelvic muscles. I breathe. When they relax a little, I pull back in a slightly different spot. Lather rinse repeat! (that was a joke - don't shampoo your vagina!)

When I pee, I try to create that same relaxed feeling I get when I massage my vagina in the bath. I try to relax, and not to push the pee out. When I started noticing how I pee I realised that my flow got faster and slower as I peed - a sign of tense muscles. Now that I've learned to relax those muscles, my pee comes out more evenly.

That's all I do on my pelvic muscles, because I haven't found a good PT to work on them yet. I also massage other muscles that affect pelvic tension, like the psoas (in your tummy) and the piriformus (sp?) (in your bum), I found out how to do that by reading the Trigger Point Workbook, the book I mentioned in the earlier post.

Cheers,

Beth
