interstitial cystitis

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Back in October 2005 I got a bladder infection while I was 6 months pregnant. I was on several different antibiotics that never seemed to work. After 2 months of symptoms (pressure, burning, frequency) the pain seem to just disappear! Then in November of 2006 I got another UTI and I continue to have symptoms today. It has been almost 4 months of the constant discomfort, pain, frequency, burning, etc. I have seen 4 different doctors and currently seeing a urogynie and pelvic pain specialist. Also, I have been getting acupuncture for the past 7 weeks. Frequency is a little better but not much of anything else. I also take hydroxine and Elmiron and Bladder Q. Two weeks ago I had a cystoscopy that showed inflammation in my urethra and bladder wall. The doc did not want to diagnose me with IC - though my bladder did not hold as much water as the average Joe. He told me he wants to treat this as urethritis due to urethra inflammation and burning. He put me on Macrobid for 1 month. I have a history of constipation which got real bad after giving birth and these symptoms make the pain a lot worse. Anyway, I follow an IC diet which sort of helps but is overwhelming. I get confused. I think stress plays a huge role in all of this. I have a stressful job and a 1 y.o daughter along with being a perfectionist. My dad recently died suddenly and I think added to everything. I have never been so miserable or desperate! I am overwhelmed with reading all of the info on the internet and am asking you on where to start - what books and tapes to order and techniques to use. I have been spending so much money on crap - so sick of it. I am quitting my job to be a full time mom - I am willing to do anything to get my life back. Let me know where I need to begin!! Thank you for all that you do in helping all of us who have been struck with this awful problem! However - I am hopeful and confident!!

Tara

Hi Tara. Been there. I know how awful it is. I think Dr. Stoll will recommend that you start with some form of skilled relaxation. See the archives and glossary for that as well as the three-legged stool.

Is there any chance you could have a candida infection? This can mimic the usual UTI's and can be made worse by antibiotics. How is the Macrobid working? You should also eliminate sugar and white flour from your diet. There is a ton of info on this website re all of this.

Dr. Stoll will probably respond in the morning tomorrow. We are all here to help.

I forgot to ask. Have you tried cranberry capsules, not the juice - too much sugar - or something called D-Mannose which comes from cranberries? I find they help a lot.

Hi, Tara.

Listen to Naya. I would like to see an actual urinalysis report (commercial lab) from while you are actually having symptoms.

In MY experience SR is the only thing that is a cure for this and, if money is no object, the vaginal biofeedback probes are the fastest way to relieve your symptoms even though total body elimination of bracing is still the only real cure.

You have to become an expert in SR and practice it at least twice a day. It has to be as automatic as breathing.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi Tara,
I've been there also. In fact, it's what brought me to this site. Have you read Dr. Stoll's article on IC? I'll post the link below. It REALLY helped me to read this article and realize that the cause is tension in the pelvic muscles. I started doing a lot of kegel exercises several times a day, where I would hold them for as long as I could - not short or fast ones - and it eventually worked to get some of the tension out. It took a good 4-6 weeks to really start feeling better. I also found that drinking a ton of water really helped me. And I started following the 3LS that Dr. Stoll recommends all the time on this site. I'm sure that has helped as well.
It sounds like you are especially stressed right now, with the new baby, your father passing away, and being a perfectionist in general. The tension eventually catches up to you, causing pain you would never dream you'd have... Good luck with this - it IS beatable!!
