interstitial cystitis

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Back in October 2005 I got a bladder infection while I was 6 months pregnant. I was on several different antibiotics that never seemed to work. After 2 months of symptoms (pressure, burning, frequency) the pain seem to just disappear! Then in November of 2005 I got another UTI and I continue to have symptoms today. It has been almost 4 months of the constant discomfort, pain, frequency, burning, etc. I have seen 4 different doctors and currently seeing a urogynie and pelvic pain specialist. Also, I have been getting acupuncture for the past 7 weeks. Frequency is a little better but not much of anything else. I also take hydroxine and Elmiron and Bladder Q. Two weeks ago I had a cystoscopy that showed inflammation in my urethra and bladder wall. The doc did not want to diagnose me with IC - though my bladder did not hold as much water as the average Joe. He told me he wants to treat this as urethritis due to urethra inflammation and burning. He put me on Macrobid for 1 month. I have a history of constipation which got real bad after giving birth and these symptoms make the pain a lot worse. Anyway, I follow an IC diet which sort of helps but is overwhelming. I get confused. I think stress plays a huge role in all of this. I have a stressful job and a 1 y.o daughter along with being a perfectionist. My dad recently died suddenly and I think added to everything. I have never been so miserable or desperate! I am overwhelmed with reading all of the info on the internet and am asking you on where to start - what books and tapes to order and techniques to use. I have been spending so much money on crap - so sick of it. I am quitting my job to be a full time mom - I am willing to do anything to get my life back. Let me know where I need to begin!! Thank you for all that you do in helping all of us who have been struck with this awful problem! However - I am hopeful and confident!!

Tara

Hi Tara,

Is your husband complaining about any urinary or prostate symptoms?

I've had IC for years but I never had burning, just tenderness in bladder & frequency. Sometimes I would go every 15 min.24/7. Have you searched the archives? Seems I remember Dr Stoll answering this b/4. I finally found a treatment for my migraines & by some miracle the med helped my IC. Good luck!

My mom & sister have IC. Both have been helped by a natural product
called "Prelief" which MD's actually encourage patients to use. It takes
the acid out of your urine. It's a form of calcium like no other. Should
be able to order at drugstores and on the web. It has virtually cured my
mom & sis. Also for your constipation try "Triphala" by Planetary
Formulas. Dr Andrew Weil recommends this and it cleared up my
constipation which was severe. It is a very gentle fiber tablet that will
not bloat you up. After 3 days you will be normal. It will not weaken
your bowel and it is not a laxative. It has been a godsend for me. Buy
the tablets 1000 mg not the powder. Take before you eat. Good Luck

I suffered from this, a few years back before I got PG with my now almost 2 yr old. It is by far the worst thing I have ever had. I had frequency, pressure, burning...bloating, the works. I was miserable and felt totally hopeless, I looked to the internet to find any cure..tried aloe vera, prelief, all kinds of herbs, marshmallow root. I kept searching.. I found this site, read some testimonials and was intrigued..I bought the book and followed everything walt said to do.I asked ?? on this board for help along the way, I also started taking calcium citrate, which seemed to help almost immediatly. Prelief worked a little, also , but not as well as the C Citrate. I took it twice a day. Anyway, after I learned SR and started doing it 2Xs..somedays even 3 if I felt really bad, things started to really improve. after about 3 months I noticed a huge difference- the pain was more of a discomfort than actual pain...well, after another month or two, all symptoms seemed to be gone! I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW RELIEVED I WAS!! I AM FOREVER GREATFUL to Dr Stoll for this site and his information. He gave me hope...and with good reason to! I could hope, because I HAD the power to get rid of this! IT was UP TO ME! I had to take personal responsibility for my own health. I was not about to accept -there is nothing we can do for IC. I am proof there IS. and it's called Skilled Relaxation. I bought herbert benson's book, walt's book, and the anxiety workbook. No, it did not happen overnight, but it did happen. I have not had a bladder problem since. YOU CAN rid yourself of this...read the archives, learn about bracing, get the books and learn SR. I am giving you what Walt gave me...HOPE that you CAN overcome this, and you will if you follow Walt's advice. He is a very knowledgable man. I know firsthand how painful this is, so I know you will want to do everything you can to get rid of it. I wish you the best of luck. Please let us know how your doing and when your "cured" come back and give us a testimonal!!

Dear Amanda - Thanks for the info. I will definitely order the book right away along with trying the calcium citrate. How long did you have symptoms? Can I purchase C.Citrate just like at a Walgreen's? This post has given me so much hope. Actually, I just came across the website yesterday and today I started to do Kegal exercises and felt better. It may sound crazy but it is true along with deep breathing. It is still there but today was different. I will not live with this and I will conquer it! Hey - also were you on Elmiron or Hydroxine?? Any help with those if you were. Thanks from the bottom of my heart and soul. I will be hopefully letting you know good things!!

Victoria - Yes, I tried prelief about 1 month after I had symptoms and it didn't completely help but I will try again now that it seems to be proven to work. I will let you know. Also, where could I purchase Triphala? I heard of Dr.Weil's books. Do you recommend them? Did your sister do the Self Relaxation exercises too? How bad was their IC? Thank you for your time and support. I feel like I am finally getting guided it the right direction! I can't tell you how much better I feel, thinking there is hope!

Tara~
No, I was not on any meds. I was not yet diagnosed with IC, but on my way// I never got the test done where they look in your bladder..cystoscope, I think it was called...I suffered with this for about 5 months only, until I took charge, but it felt like five years! I followed a whole foods diet, and looked up acid/alkaline charts and ate alkaline foods. I tested my ph every morn upon awakening...Soon I became alkaline and just kept learning more and becoming a SR pro. I also do 45 mins of aerobics each day ( I had been doing that for several years even prior to the IC) YOU WILL BEAT THIS!! Let me know if I can help you any further...I get my C citrate from GNC, but ask people here...not sure if any one is better than another. This board is an awesome place for healing! Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I have had symptoms for 4 months and it feels like forever. One question I have - I am overwhelmed with all of the self-help books that have skilled relaxation in them. How do i know which one to buy!? What was the name of the book you ordered from Benson and Walt? Thanks for everything!
