tight urethra

Posted by Michelle on December 20, 2000 at 15:51:54:

Walt... I sent a message a few days ago regarding urethral stricture and inflammatory bladder neck polyps that I had a few years ago. And recently I found out that I have trace-small amount of blood in my urine again. Anyway, I went to my urologist today and he did a cystoscopy and found my bladder to be totally normal. But, he did say that my urethra was "tight" and he dilated it. He said that I may have to come in yearly for dilatation but he said my urethra and bladder were otherwise normal. My questions to you is... can a tight urethra cause a trace or small amount of blood in the urine? What does he mean by a "tight" urethra? Also, can a tight urethra cause some stress incontinence? Thanks. I know I should have asked all of these questions to my doc while I was there... I was just so nervous from the procedure and I ran out of time. Thanks

Hi, Michelle.

"Tight urethra" is most commonly caused by the tight perineal muscles we have been talking about in the archives about IC.

If you do not resolve this you will be likely to soon have IC yourself. Since there are no polyps you can now concentrate on the cure for this problem: SR.

I can remember, 30 years ago, when I had nothing better to offer than repeated "dilations" of the urethra for this problem. It is really too bad that a specialist in this problem still is intentionally ignorant about the cause.

After all, if he took the time to educate you about the cause, you would never need him again.

Hi Walt. Thanks for the advice and information that I can look into and help with the bracing. I am sure this does not surprise you, but I have also been diagnosed with chronic myofascial pain syndrome. I think bracing goes right with the myofascial problem. I was wondering though what you thought about having a trace of blood in the urine and mild stress incontinence.... can this be caused by a tight urethra? Thanks.
