Interstitial Cystitis

Posted by Jennifer on January 18, 2001 at 12:06:51:

Dr. Stoll,

I am very interested in your explanation of the causes of IC. I have not been diagnosed, but have been suffering from similar symptoms for about a year.

I read your IC article and bought the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Workbook.

The reason I am writing is that I don't really feel as if I have IC. That is what doctors are saying I probably have, but will not know until I undergo a Hydrodistention.

Your article is very intersting to me because I feel that I may have found a connection in my symptoms.

A couple of years ago I had gynecological laser surgery that caused a lot of pain in healing. I still have pain off an on. I am wondering if it is possible that I am unconsiously tensing the muscles in that area in reaction to the pain.

My main symptom is pressure in the bladder area. I notice, however, that after a good nights sleep I feel much better in the morning. (In contrast to many IC patients who suffer from nocturia). Throughout the day I fell progressively worse.

The other thing is that I was given hyoscamine and my bladder pain and pressure went away. I am wondering if this medicine can help the bladder from being tense. If so, I am wondering if this is the reason for my problem.

I started reading the stress workbook and will definately make a good effort at trying to relax. Since no conventional doctors can explain why I am having these problems I am thinking that the solution does not lie with them.

Also, I am wondering if I should put off the Hydro in case it may make matters worse. I would hate to try and fix something that may not even be broken.

In conclusion, I am wondering if my "theory" is the cause of my problems. Thanks for your time.

Hi Jennifer ,

I do not know if i have i.c either and read about dr stoll s.r in the b.b .like you i do not wake up at night to go to the bathroom but i have urrethral pain etc .
i started to do s.r 2 months ago and will go to check it tonite with biofeedback .i hope it wll help .what dr stoll says makes sense .i think for whatever reason we tense our muscles there ,so i think by doing s.r twice a day we can learn to relax the muscle there .i know it is a discipline ,believe me ,but i think it is our best bate to get rid of that .
i also plan to take the silva method mind control in a wekend seminar .they teach it all over ,i am in san francisco and they teach it here .i know dr stoll took it years ago andit helped him alot .it is 300 usd but worth it .i will try anything to get rid of that .
hang in there ,read the b.b on i.c .go under testimonial and read the one of nov 29th by that lady who had ic and got rid of it with s.r .it is inspiring when one feels down with this condition .
also try homeopathy ,it helpes me alot .fins a good doctor in your area or call the hoemopathic institute for reference .i know some here ,feel free to ask if you are in my region or tell me where you are i can ask the directory .also read under watercure2.com .i found it interesting and worth a shot .i am afraid to drink because of more pressure but apparently it helped many ills ,so it at least 30 days to see results .i will try it .
do not get discouraged .i cried alot so many times but i know the answer is there .i trust dr stoll .as he says ,the only thing hard to do is to make people do the s.r .it is a commitment but i am willing to do it because i want to prove myself that i can overcome this .urologists know so little about this .they never told me i had i.c but i suspect i have a varien even if i do not have urgency and never wake up at night .i also had years ago a gynecological procedure done and i think i tensed up my muscles there (also due to childhood traumas )
try the s.r ,check it with a biofeedback twice after 2 ,3 weeks of doing the s.r
i still do nt know whether i am doing it right but i will keep on doing it .
read the watercure2.com .let me know your thoughts .you can email me too.

good luck ,

best of health to all of us and thank you dr stoll,

georgia

Thanks, Georgia.

Pelvic muscle bracing does not just cause IC but contributes to urethral symptoms, recurrent bladder infections, painful intercourse, recurrent vaginitis, prostatosis/prostatitis and hemorrhoids, etc.

Conventional medicine is good at differentiating these things and treating them as different conditions with different treatments. Of course, they are missing the forest for the seeing the trees and SO none of the treatments are very effective.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Jennifer.

See my note to Georgia.

I will try to answer your questions in the order in which you have them listed:

It is likely that your unconscious reaction to the pain is contributing to the problem but that doesn't matter since the SR will resolve it anyhow.

It is not the tension in your bladder that is the problem; it is the tension in your levator ani which makes up the voluntary (second) sphincter to your bladder. The hyoscamine reduced your bladder muscle function so you did not notice as much that your bladder was distending behind the blockage of the sphincter. Eventually that would have caused an actual problem with your bladder.

The hydro test will just distend your bladder and will not cause you any permanent problems. HOWEVER, the doc's interpretation of the results COULD get you in trouble since they might then suggest treatments that WOULD. So long as you do nothing about their recommendations, you are safe.

Remember: You cannot "try" the SR and expect it will work. You have to "DO" it correctly and persistantly for your problem to be resolved permanently.

Hope this helps.

Walt

To Jennifer ,

Hi Jennifer ,

I hope you are reading this .Please listen to DR Stoll .He makes sene to me and i totally trust this wonderful Doctor!!!

I went to the biofeedback last thrus to test my S.r after a month andi am doing it right .She specialises in bladder problem (i found her by luck but i do not believe in coincidence so it was meant to be ).anyway ,this great therapist kept me 90 minutes and tested also my vaginal, pireneal muscles and could show me on the screen how tense they were .I CAN EVEN FEEL IT TENSE .She told me to continue S.r ,she is impressed with my results and also told me to do kegel exercises (do you know them)to strenghten the bladder ,vagina and the pelvic floor muscle .She explained to me that when we do kegel by tensing the vaginal muscles(but breathing from the belly still..hard to do ,and relaxing the tights at the same times )we send a message to our brain to relax this area .the more we do kegel ,the more we send messages to the brain to relax because it seems like the opposite but it is not .the more we do it the more we relax it in the long run .
please do the s.r .As dr stoll says ,the conventional medecine will not cure this problem because you have to get to the root of it and only s.r will make you learn to relax that muscle .It is a discipline ,i am doing it everyday ,but believe me ,i believe we can overcome this debilitating condition .I spent many nights and days crying because of pain etc.i will cure myself of that and help many people thru testimonials . I CAN AND YOU CAN DO IT !!!
Start today ,good days ,bad days ,believe you can do it . I do to.
Lets be there for one another .

you will get better ,

Georgia

Hi Georgia,

It took a little while to respond, I don't always have internet access. I want to thank you for your comments and feelings on the subject. It is a very scary thing to deal with. Like you I am not sure if I have IC, but whatever it is it is wrecking my whole life it seems. I am supposed to get married in August and I am very scared that I can't overcome this and I won't ever get married. It affects every part of my life. It is hard to work (being an accountant in busy season working 40+ hours a week does not help.)
I know that I need to believe that I will get better but it is really hard. I am doing the SR but I don't know if I have access to biofeedback. I haven't talked to my Urologist about it yet. She is not very sympathetic--just says there is no known cause and no known cure. I am so glad to have found Dr. Stoll, though. My gyno actually said the best thing for me would be to research it myself because many Uro's don't know or believe in IC.
I hope that you are feeling better- let me know how you are doing. I am trying the SR by myself. I need to find out if my HMO will cover SR therapy or counseling or something. It is nice to know that I am not alone. I actually live in New Mexico. Kind of far from San Fran. Thanks for your help!!!!!! It means a lot.

Jennifer
