more interstitial cystitis questions....DR STOLL .

Posted by georgia on April 23, 2001 at 20:39:13:

Dear Dr Stoll,

Today i re-read alot of the posts on I.C and the more i read ,the more it all makes sense even more and help me realize that there is a way out of this terrible Interstitial cystitis condition.I continue to do skilled relaxation ,somedays are better than others .It is a discipline and hard to do but i know we ve got to do it .
I read alot of posts from women with I.C and i have another question that might help alot of us .
I feel my pireneal muscle tense there all the time .What can one do to CONSCIOUSLY RELAX IT???My biofeeback therapist (i see her every 2 weeks .cant afford more)puts a probe in my vagina and teach me to relax it .As i do ,i can see on the screen it does and is less tense .However ,i still experience burning /pressure in the urethra on and off every day .So ,again, how can i relax the perineal muscle consciously all the time ?is that possible?I do the kegel three times a day (10 times)but as soon as i stop ,if i do not think of relaxing the muscle there ,it goes back to being tense on is own.I cannot think of it 24 hours a day,so how can i talk to "my brain"to relax it ???I am trying hard ,believe me ,but when i work or stand up for instance or do not think of saying to myself to relax ,i feel the muscle tightening and i have to say"relax".i ALSO feel pressure or burning (,burning more if i am tense or think negative about my health ) in the urethra but it is hard to make it go away even if at that time i tell myself "relax".why????
Do you advise my to buy a gsr machine (used one)to test my skilled relaxation ???.I have done it 5 months almost and do not want to find out i am doing it wrong .The thing the biofeedback therapist does is just makes me aware of how to relax the muscle there by being aware of it .Is that good in your opinion???she practises with me by telling me to find n my mind a place of relaxation etc..and i can see on the screen that my muscle relaxes.

What do you think of all that ???
also (las 2 questions),does having an orgasm or sex help the perineal muscle relax ???in that case would having sex help.???It does not hurt me too much during sex ,except sometimes the urethra feels sore and that is not fun , but other than that it is better than it used to be .so does having an orgasm help???
last question ...as i do the s.r ,i sometimes feel a spasm in my urethra (like a little electric shock)as i relax or focus there ???what does that mean???/I used to have that years ago ,but now i feel it only sometimes when i do skilled relaxation or sometimes after peeing.it is in the urethra only .is this a good or bad sign that little electric shock????
THANK YOU AGAIN DR sTOLL FOR ALL YOUR HELP .You help so many of us and we are grateful.thanks you for all your time and generosity Dr Stoll!!!
We have to find a way to do a seminar.I will write again about that seminar idea,

NAMASTE ,

Georgia

p.s sorry for the typing mistakes .

Dear Georgia,

For what it's worth (have healed my own vaginal stuff over the years, mainly from yoga), I suggest you think of it this way:

Don't worry about HOW TO TRAIN THE MUSCLE and become STRESSED about doing every healing thing correctly.

Your post struck me as very frustrated, and believe me, I know how that feels. But you can only get better from this point on, armed with the knowledge that you're going to relax and heal your body.

So, to get back to my point, rather than trying to force or expadite the healing of your pubic/kegel muscles all at once, and do it all just so, etc., think of it this way:

EVERY TIME YOU CAN DO IT, even for just a minute, you're helping to retrain them. Every time. If you can just relax them for three minutes a day, that's three new minutes a day. Perhaps in a week, you can relax them for five. The point is, muscles are trained to be tense (which takes time, and you didn't exactly plan the tension out, right?) so it follows that they can train to be un-tense, on their own, just by you being conscious of that relaxation.

Hope that helps.

Best,
Dianne

oh, and p.s.

You can have an orgasm from non-penetrative sex (hello! oral!) if the penetration part is difficult. Or masturbation. I think orgasm is definitely a relaxor for those muscles, and floods the vaginal tissues with blood/oxygen/etc.

A book you might like is Sexual Radiance by Dr. Susan Taylor.

Hello Diane ,

Thanks for your post .It is nice of you to give me these advises because it is frustrating to think whether or not i am doing the right thing.I started yoga and will continue ,as well as watching how to un-tense my muscle there .When did you start feeling results with yoga?
I know it is a presonal thing ,not everyone react the same ,but did you feel benefits as you continue yoga regularly????IF you do not mind me asking, what problem did you have???
Anyway ,thanks for your nice messagge and advise .i will try to put it into practice.

Georgia

Hi, Georgia.

Pretty hard to do it consciously (though not impossible) when you are having symptoms, especially.

In MY experience the most effective way is to discharge the stored bracing throughout the bodymind and the perineal muscle will take care of itself.

A separate note you posted today made me think that you needed to also "let" your relaxation work since the harder you try the less it will!

The little 'electric shock' is a good sign.
