Dear, Dr. Stoll
This weekend my girlfriend and I had multiple sexual intercourses together and she got to the point where the lubricant from the condom burned when I put it in. As well as these other side effects she said she has to urinate like every fifteen minutes which she never had to do before as well as a pain around her abdomen when she urinates. Also said she felt really sore and when she got home from visiting me at school she said she was bleeding a little. Her period isn't due for another 10 days. Is this just normal after rough multiple intercourse or could there be really something wrong. I have been her only sex partener we had sex twice before this weekend and this weekend we did it 5 times until these symtoms came about and could do it no more.
Deeply Concerned

I luckily have never had cystitis, but that sounds how I've heard it described. One of the causes is bacteria being pushed up into the urethra during intercourse. A good preventative is to make sure she always urinates afterwards.
First thing she needs to do is drink lots of water - more than usual, say 4 litres a day. Even tho she will be tempted to drink less. Make sure she empties her bladder completely each time she urinates. Cranberry juice is also supposed to help.
Dr Stoll will be able to give you more info when he logs on tomorrow, but hopefully this will help for now.
Deb.

The cranberry juice sold in grocery stores is just a bunch of sugar water with no cranberry in it. You need to get pure cranberry juice at the health food store. It tastes really awful, but you can dilute it with water. You can also buy pills with cranberry concentrate at the HFS.

Now she tells me her urine is orangish. Hurts when she goes to the bathroom still.

Hi Michael, I'm not Walt but thought I might add something that has helped me in the past. A nice hot soak in the bath tub and drinking lots and lots of water, even drinking a bit of chamomile tea might be soothing. These are only ways of dealing with the symptoms though. You might want to share this website and information concerning IC with your friend. I'm sure that Walt can speak more knowledgeably about the orangish color. Hope this helps your girlfriend.

Hi, Michael,
Your lady friend at least has a bruised bladder and possibly the urethra as well. If this does not clear up in a few days, with the information so helpfully provided by the others who responded, she needs to see a urologist for a cystoscopy.
I am betting that it WILL clear up.
You both might consider her being in the "dominant" position in the future so she has more control as to where the penis hits.
Let us know how she does.
Walt

We tried that position but her legs are to short and that is the way she liked it. Some of my friends said it could be a Urinary track infection. Could it be. We had know idea what we were doing could cause damage. Now we know just hope she heals ok.

Dear Michael,
OF COURSE, it could also be a bladder infection BUT it was caused by the bladder wall bruising. The reason I suggested the cystoscopy, if it did not clear up on its own in a few days, is that there may be more than just bruising AND any infection would be diagnosed at the same time.

I, like your girlfriend, get this from time to time. Especially after frequent intercourse. It is commonly called, "honeymoon cystitis". Like the others have said, she needs to urinate immediately following intercourse, drink lots of water, and there is an over the counter analgesic called, "Azo-Standard" that will ease the pain. It
will make her urine bright orange, but that is normal and shows you that it is working its way through the urinary tract. Cranberry juice is a good way to help AVOID this but it won't necessarily help to heal it any faster once it has started. My only other advice is "gentleness", if you plan to have frequent intercourse.
