I've read the archives on IC and have a question. Should antibiotics be taken in conjunction with SR? I understand the chicken and the egg as far as bracing as the causitive factor, however, most of your responses to antibiotic questions lean away from taking them, but a note on October 17 of last year stated you felt that antibotics and SR should be done in conjuction with each other. If one takes antibiotics, where do you get tested to find out what to take, and is this the type of antibiotic therapy done by culture and considered long-term? Thanks, Cat

Dear Cat,
Good questions since the answers to this CAN be individual.
The best rule is that no one with a diagnosis of IC should EVER take antibiotics without a culture & sensitivity of the urine. There are standards that tell any honest doc whether antibiotics are worth while taking AND which antibiotics would be effective at the same time. This test only takes a few days and one can take pyrimidine in the meantime to help numb the surface of the bladder without significant side effects. Watch out for staining the clothes.
