Night Shadows

Posted by Jim H. [1652.14] on May 18, 2004 at 04:19:10:

Sometimes the valley lights sparkle. Not tonight. Why do they sparkle some nights but not others? If science has an explanation, it would only take away the wonder of the mystery.

Science tosses us breadcrumbs from God’s doorstep, and we follow them like Hansel through the forest of whatever fairytale we are living. Then the birds eat the crumbs behind us.

Tonight the forest is dark and foreboding. I am not at home here. Apprehension comes with me in this night. The gnarled roots and animal sounds belong here, but not me. I intrude in the mystery of it, an overmatched trekker.

The darkness groundswell is a mood tide rising that has already announced itself in a dream, night before last, so this forest of hair raising metaphor comes as no surprise.

Remedy, intellectual or medicinal, is not called for. It is best to sit silently inside the teepee, as the women once did, and let the images act upon me. Soon it will pass. It is good to honor the shadows in this way.

Speaking of night, Jim, I so enjoy the bright star-lit nights in the north CA mountains. From where I live, I can hardly see any human lights or hear any human noise--it's truely heaven for me!

Hi Bliss,

If you mean PMS, that's hilarious, and you'd be right. I've experienced periodic dark moods all my life. My wife has had to live with me through this, but says mine is nothing compared to the pre-mentrual episode. I wouldn't argue this. I don't claim equality, but these moods can be real bullies, can't they?...and a font of creativity!

Women learn much earlier in life than I (men) have (do), not to act on the urges and ideas of these times, because when the dark mood lifts, you wonder what the hell you did that for (though it might feel really good while you're doing it) (right?)! I think I have gained some of the woman's wisdom in dealing with my moods (finally), but I still have the tendency to steer clear (run) at the first sign of irrational crossness in my woman.

Jim

Hi Bing,

I am glad to hear you have landed well in California. My portion of the sky is pretty spectacular out here too, and the "human" lights in the valley below are jewels.

We are toying with the idea of buying a summer home in Northern California/Southern Oregon. Thanks for the testimonial!

Jim

Hmm, interesting, you got me to think about those "dark moods" and the creativity that can be inspired from that, just like being in love can inspire such creativity, and I have been there too (more than once~!). I guess anything that heightens emotions can inspire creativity.

I never thought to use those "dark moods" for expression or creativity instead of indulging in it. I tend to mope in those dark moods, and feel very stuck in themm. My saving grace has been coming to the understanding and realization that it will PASS. Not to allow it to pull me deeper and deeper into the dark abyss. I compare it to the ocean. Waves of moods. They eventually will reach a peak/climax and then peeta out to nothing, so in a sense, I go with the flow, and realize it's not 4eva, and it's not who I truly am, or the real me. Its just the "hormonal wave".

BUT THEN AGAIN, there are those who say FEEL IT, the full intensity of it, don[t try and dull it, and let it move on of it's own accord. I don't know which school of thought to believe. Avoid feeling it, or FEEL it!It doesn't feel good or right to dwell/indulge in it, or does it? No, I don't think so.

Yes, I did mean PMS or PMT (premenstrual tension)
I heard that when that time of the month arrives for us women, that whatever comes up (negatively;dark moods) is where our life is lacking in someway, and is brought up for us to look at our life, and reassess it. Or is it just hormones, and nothing else, and we are making too much of those dark moods, and overanalysing!

You m7ust be an anomaly Jim. I hardly/rarely hear of men experiencing dark mooods. That's quite different for a man! Are you a "cancer" by birthsign?

Most men are so fortunate to not experience different moods. Pretty much one mood all the time! ;-)

P.S. If I had to choose which sex to be born into, I would STILL choose female! ;-) Even with all the hormonal issues and childbirth that we go through, i still enjoy being my sex. Like I have a choice! ;-)
