Father died this morning...

Posted by Jim H. [4759.2418] on December 04, 2005 at 08:47:09:

...and it was a good and peaceful thing.

I am sitting, Siddhartha-like, with river metaphors flowing from my
keyboard.

Desert blue Stream of Life flows from the upstream source,
somewhere in the headwaters of dreams of lore and recollection, to
this very spot at our soil-planted feet.

The vast and watery silence moves swiftly by us in this mystery
beauty place, from here at the shore of the endless new water, it
passes on through the scoured valleys of character and destiny, on to
somewhere down along the way, to an ocean of Myths and Tales
we’ve heard about but never seen.

More Dark River flows by here than any thirsty, beauty-observing one
of us could ever use.

And all around us we are reflected in the landscape earth of ancient
wrinkled skin, a river-sculpted face, whose gaze reveals the grins and
tears of sun and rain, and eons of a windy fate.

And we can watch this living portrait from a promontory, above and
beyond the heart and mind, even as we are wading in the River itself.

It is the exquisite paradox of the soul, and the Truth that unites us.

You have the gift of showing that currents of the Rivers of life and the River Styx are in fact the same stream. But you already know that, Desert One. I celebrate the death and rebirth of your Father. It is a time for great joy.

Farewell, Father, who “now knows more about the River than any of
us can guess”.

Thank you, all, for the expressions of regret for my loss. The loss I
am aware of is not that of losing my father, but rather the loss of my
own regret over the father I never had, that is to say, the father I
always wanted. That was not a loss at all, but a resolution, and a
great relief.

The regret, the longing of a lifetime of an estranged son, has long
since turned to ashes, just like Father’s corporeal being, which will be
rendered to ashes today. My atonement comes, in no small part, from
my experience of the ordeal of Father’s slow decline

His headstrong life invited judgment, especially that of his only son,
who wilted lifelong under a father’s stern gaze. I am free of those
judgments now, and have been for a while. The gift of Father’s
humiliating demise was a healing reconciliation, uneasy, to be sure,
brought about by his grudging admiration of my unpaid loyalty, my
willingness (and worthiness, in his mind) to give care to him on his
own unbending terms, and it comes from the inner peace that arises
from the forgiveness I granted both him and myself because of what I
saw from my role as selfless servant to him at the end of his life.
There is salvation in the Commandment to “Honor Thy Mother and
Thy Father”. Sacrifice frees Spirit.

I allowed him to retain the myth of his fierce independence, even as
he soiled his pants and forgot my daughter’s name, and behind the
tattered remnants of his imperious dignity, I found the Oz…and I
found a Toto. Where was that playful little dog when I needed him to
pull that curtain aside when I was a boy?!

I know how ideal our life together wasn’t, because it couldn’t be,
couldn’t have been, simply because it wasn’t. A brand new
Grandfather has risen from the ashes of that convoluted misery.

The King is dead! Long live the King! That's the way of things.

I'll try not to reign on my family's parade.

nobody can find the words to make it better in time like this. I am with you as others. I remember very vividly the suden (may be only to me) death of my dad. You can express your feeling such a beautiful way.
