The curse of rescue

Posted by Jim H. [1652.2562] on June 26, 2006 at 06:16:22:

Our most recent rescue is Alpha, a badly matted cat with no tail, who
we found dying in the heat just the other day (easy to do here where
it was 117 yesterday with a low of 93...at 5:00AM!). We didn’t want to
do it, but we just couldn’t leave her sprawled and panting there. You
know when it's one you have to do. It can complicate life...the curse
of rescue.

When we got her home, she acted delirious, but sweet at first. Then,
when she cooled down, she started acting scared and wild, and we
thought, oh no, we picked up a feral cat, with who knows what
diseases, and brought it into our home with the other animals, and
we can’t even pick it up to get it to the vet’s office. After a week,
though, we gained her trust, only to pack her off in a cage to the vet
for a shave and an exam. This was somewhat of a further trauma for
her, and she got a little wild again.

Now she is calmed again, but this morning we are going to put her in
the cage again and take her with us to California for the rest of the
summer. She will have to adjust again. I will keep her in my office/
studio until we can get her socialized with our other cat and three
dogs.

Yeah, we picked up another dog recently, Charlie the snoring, black
pug. I promised Sharon’s mother, before she died, that we would take
him. What a menagerie!

From one cat lover to another--BLESS YOU for doing that!

What a menagerie, indeed, but don't you feel blessed to be "owned" by them?

From one Rescuer to another ... you'd miss the 'curse' if you quit Rescuing. :)

I often times will think "Oh no what have I gotten myself into" -- I'm actually thinking that right now with the two dogs I agreed to board for the next month ... but like every time .. things will settle down and you'll then wonder what you worried about to begin with. :)

Thanks for saving her ... she'll come around and realize that she's much better off with you - I'm sure of it.

Best of luck to you all !

I know how that goes. however, one simply cannot leave an abandoned animal to fend for itself. This is how my menagerie grows:-)

Thanks, Jim.

What a lucky cat!

My favorite charity has been "Best Friends", the huge rescued animal snactuary out your way. I know they can help more with their organization than I can filling my home with a menagerie--although I am in awe of those who can.

Namaste`

Walt

Thanks, Walt, I googled it.

They started in Arizona but moved to Utah. They do good stuff, not just dogs either. They'll have my support!

I'm just seeing this now, and I whole heartedly give 2 thumbs up. In fact, I'm wearing their t-shirt right now.

I've been a supporter for so many years--it is my dream to take my daughter there someday and spend a week helping out. Of course, Madeline's only 17 months right now, so I guess I'll have to wait a while....

Good for you, Jim. Thanks for helping out that kitty. And if you ever want a good read, I've posted a link below....it's really touching.

Take care!
