Distant Weather

Posted by Jim H. [291.2562] on July 04, 2006 at 08:30:29:

The more my life circumstance changes, the more it is the same. I am
the constant. This I ponder as the surf washes up around my ankles.

Ocean tides of distant weather bring
Blue-green breakers that pound the shore
And dissipate with a hiss across the sand.
They are waves of momentum
From the somewhere else squalls of yesterday.

These silent swells rise in curling sheets
And beat the shore with thunderous power.
They come from another time, another place,
Just as destiny’s billows and breaks within us,
Currents from the inclement thinking
And stormy deeds of yesterday,
That we thought we left behind.

Beautiful poem and sentiments Jim. I think we just have to accept the fact that we are a walking imprint of ourselves. How we integrate the beauty and the beast in us is the ultiate challenge. Sometimes our bad experiences make us stronger and drive us to do great things. That can be comforting. Our strength shows during the trying times, thank goodness for that.

Qoooops, that's "ultimate" not "ultiate".

I knew what you meant. I made a typo too...should have just "destiny"..like this:

The more my life circumstance changes, the more it is the same. I am the constant. This I ponder as the surf washes up around my ankles.

Ocean tides of distant weather bring
Blue-green breakers that pound the shore
And dissipate with a hiss across the sand.

That we thought we left behind.

I figured you'd know but still...and it's nice to know that even you make a mistake once in a while:-)

..."once in awhile"? Even I? Puhleeze! If only you knew.

But thanks for your comments on integrating the opposites. I think what you said is true.

Ok, I believe you, 'bout the mistakes. I'm glad you liked my comments! Artists are always fascinated by the sacred and the profane and how they manifest and coexist within one soul.

Jim,

Walking off in the woods is one thing, but walking into the water is another. We would never find you.

Some people stick their toes in the ocean, marvel at the waves, and conjure metaphors. Other folks take surfboards and ride the waves. Probably you should worry more about the latter, Steve, but I appreciate your concern for my wandering habits.

The little fits and starts of my dreamed of retirement life so far are pathetic, really. This current I am in is more than a momentum in the tide of karma and past deeds that carries me along; there is a chokehold of habit, and an under-toe of assumption and expectation, even a quicksand of emotional muck. Wah! The lizard sheds his skin, but he’s still just a lizard.

So I’ve decided to become proactive. I made a list! Something to pull me from this riptide. A list. Hah! A list to shake its finger at me. Who’s my daddy?

Main item on the list for today is vet for Kashi. Sad. It is time to put him down. We have spent the last two nights, no sleep, nursing him. He can’t make it anymore. He’s game, but too far gone. He is much like my father was at the end. Old puppy senility. Good ole boy. Painful duty.

For me its harder to put down a beloved pet, than it was to watch my father die. I know from where your coming. I feel for you Jim.

I don't usually like to butt in but I wanted to say how sorry I am about your pet, it can be hell to loose a pet you adore.

And I believe with every skin you shed, you add something new to your composition...

Funny, Vince.

I actually have surfed, but those days are long gone, and I have been to the North Shore too, but only to look. I would never get in the water there when those waves are up (or any other time either, probably). Those waves make sound that penetrates your chest when they break. I'm too chicken.

There is something I still can do though, and that is boogie board. The Southern California surf scares me for another reason. They (the idiots) allow street runoff directly into the surf, and there is a yellowish foam that sometimes forms as the break rushes onto the sand. They (idiots again) admit to sewer waste even, but I suspect PCBS and other toxic stuff! They put up signs and then tell us it's OK after a few days. Who can believe that?

Too bad Tahoe doesn't have waves, though I hear they're screwing that up too.

I don't suppose the East Coast is any better.

Thanks, Steve. Animal, moreso pet, death hits us so hard; they are so blameless, while we (humans) can seem so...well, deserving...of our fate, most especially fathers of sons. Sounds so cold.

Still, the older I get, the less emotional death becomes. Nostalgia replaces grief.

Thanks, but what "butt in", 2065? I mentioned "metaphor". I expected you'd show up.

"you add something new to your composition..."

Probably pounds.

would think that street runoff would be better that dumping raw sewage during a strom, when the treatment plants couldn't handle the load. I thought Ca learned from the old eastern cities, how to handle water, and had storm sewers, but I guess not in the older cities. Guess it could be worse, before sewage treatment, but I'll Watch the surf. When NJ beaches were closed for pollution, a friend went swiming the day after the ban was lifted, and got bad ear infections.

The only thing that our pets short lives is good for, is it gives us the oppurtunities to experience more pets and their different personalities. If you get a parrot you should be given it at birth.

You will soon have the Kashi memories, and you can have the puppy ones if you got him as a pup, or any during his life. They are yours forever.

If you believe in an after life, do you think pets have one, especially social animals, and maybe more so the ones we keep? They seem to know how to live when here on earth, so maybe they don't need one.)

Ooops, have I become too predictable? I just enjoy your depth is all...as for those extra pounds, I guess it all balances out when you shed the skin.

p.s. I really enjoyed that paragraph about karma, deeds, etc., very beautiful.

Are you in Tahoe right now?

Jim,

After your parents die, the link to your childhood is gone forever. " The buck stops here " is the phrase that comes to mind. No mom or dad to run too. Thus you become " Harden " to death because you have too. Your family is now counting on you for support.

That's what's happened to me anyway.
