Tagg

Such a beautiful being, so open and loving, so dog. She went limp in
my arms, her pain stopped, and my tears began.

Eulogy to follow.

Did this just happen? Have you just lost your dog? I am so sorry if you did.

We love them then they break our hearts....though not of their own making for they'd never hurt us intentionally. I'm sure she'd have lived forever for you if she could.

She's waiting for you, Jim. It sounds like your Heaven will be filled with many loving pets--and people.

I have a 19-yr-old myself whose demise I've lived several times already, but she's still with me, and I'm grateful for each morning that she sits, demanding, at my feet for yet another, hopefully NEW food to try (but we're running out of brands and flavors). She got finicky in her old age.....

Anyway, blessings to you and your Tagg. May your heart be mended by the love of the pets you still have around you.

Jim, my tears are flowing, too. I saw the wonderful photo. I hope you can get through the next few months without looking for Tagg in every room. It's just an awful empty feeling.
My 13-year-old cat died from the tainted petfood a few months ago and I just can't seem to get past it. I hope you do better. Procreating is a wonderful gift, but having pets is also right up there...except for this part.

I have had to go through euthanizing 2 of my dogs, within the past 10 years. Your note, and the lovely picture, brings tears to my eyes again. Both of them had lived long and happy lives until the end but still the loss is painful. Unless we have an exotic bird, a turtle or an elephant, our pets just do not live long enough!

Namaste' in your loss.

Hi Jim,

How wonderful it must have been to have such a friend for many years.

I haven't had the delight of having a dog friend, but I am now fostering two kittens for a month, which is wonderful.

My heart goes out to you in your loss.

Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks, Walt. Euthanization is such a unique experience; a great and
difficult service of love, far the other side of "no heroics".

Sharon and I were on all fours on the exam room floor (so were the
doc and aide) cradling Tagg's head and cooing in her ears at the end.
It was easy to do a hard thing like that because we knew it was right
for her.

It reminds me again of the "right to die" issue, which creates so much
polarization and hard feeling. Life on the material plane will always
be limited, but I think, some day, individuals will be allowed this
loving choice for themselves and their families.

So Sorry Jim..

We know it will come, and have to try to get ready, though it is always a shock, especially if sooner than should be. What makes the Whole Dammed Thing Worth While is, YOU have all those Many Sweet Loving Memories, that as soon as you can not think of those Last Sad ones, come flowing back, and will be with you till the day You pass on, and Maybe for eternity.

Try to shift you thoughts to happier ones. It gets easier as time passes.

I'm so sorry Jim - I am (sadly) familiar with this pain and wondering how soon again I will feel it.
My old girl Maggie will be 14 this christmas. I have had her since she was around 10 weeks old. We are wondering how we all will manage without the matriarch in our group when the time comes to say goodbye. It is never easy. Still the day comes when you actually hope that you'll find your old friend already gone, lying in their favorite naptime place, and gone peacefully...anything to prevent making that last loving choice.

And what a great photo!

Sharon says I can't have an elephant!

I am moved by all the responses to my note. I do appreciate all the
wisdom, insight and condolences everyone has shared. I feel such a
kinship with pet lovers, and I am baffled by the lame consciousness
of those who abuse animals in any way, especially as we have seen in
recent news.

I thought I'd whip out a eulogy, but I see now that it is going to be an
unfolding process over time, to get at who she really was:

Tagg took to everybody. I had a little regret about that, because, you
know, a guy wants his dog to be attached to him exclusively. The
truth is, she seemed to be equally attracted to all people..well, that's
not quite right, she was more strongly attracted to anyone who might
be carrying a sandwich. She was such a chowhound. On the few
occasions she got into things she shouldn't have, she left nothing,
like the time she stole the whole roasted chicken off the kitchen
counter and left not even a spot of chicken grease. Her guilty looks
could erase any anger one might feel over her gluttonous misdeeds.
Dog can't help it.

I couldn't agree more with your last statement. Humanity, as a supposedly rational species must eventually come to that conclusion. In the meantime we continue to treat our pets much more kindly than our we do ourselves.

Jim, Those Tagg Stories are coming already, and most dog lovers will be reminded of the Same things their dogs did. I thought only Afghans were Counter Surfers. I had one who I had to barricade from getting into the kitchen, but I think he would jump it and get in, though after loosing a whole loaf of bread and big bag of cookies, I made sure I didn't leave anything out, but forgot a shoping bag with packs of chicken breasts behind a half wall where he liked to lay, that I couldn't see him, and was wondering why he wasn't close, and went to check, since he didn't come when I called, to see if he was ok. He was OK, 1 breast gone, and working on a 2nd. They Must have been for Him. They were where he hung out often.))

Keep thinking of the good memories, and pretty soon that's all you will remember about Tagg. Too Many Good ones for the few bad to overpower. Think about all the people who will never have the joys you got from Tagg. None of my family are animal lovers, and could never understand my enjoyment.

Where we spent summers when I was a kid, my friends dad's hunting bird dog was MY dog All summer. Her name was Widdles, a B & W cocker type, who my friend, his dad, and sister completely ignored, and she Loved the attention I gave her, so she stayed near me, and Outside our house overnite, only to go home to eat. She would even sleep under our car, and if she got dirty would get a bath when home. The last summer we went there when I was about 11, I had a Bad scare by another dog when riding my bike down a hill FAST, and was chased by a big dog. I went down in the sand, with the dog over me snarling and growling, though called off by the owner, but I developed a fear that didn't leave till a friend in the city's Collie pup got car sick in my lap, while on an expressway, where we couldn't pull over for a few mi, no shoulders, and me with Unchewed Cheerio's and cut up hotdog SOUP between my legs, when I was about 20.

For the longest time, I said that That got me over my fear, since the tightness in my esophagus was similar to when I felt when around a dog, and most people had GSD's around that time, but it was more being around a harmless pup. That woke me up from my fears, and got me thinking about a breed I wanted, and when I saw 2 cream colored Afghans I thought were sheep, being walked in front of Independence Hall, I found them. A block away seeing a Bedlington Terrier which look like lambs, I started my quest, which I will have till I die, looking for ones to replace those I loose, who Each give me stories, Good and Bad, that I wouldn't trade.

This weekend looking at a car, and the owner had 2 Yellow Labs, and one would take off if not watched, I was reminded of one of my hounds. Af's will Run, if not watched, but I was reminded of one mountain type of the breed, who panted ALL year, except on the coldest days. He drank constantly, so had to pee often, and would wake me to go out. Me being a heavy sleeper, no telling how long he was calling, but when IN my face, nose touching mine, and Barking, I woke, stumbling to the kitchen door, to let him out, where he sometimes Leaked going out the door, and me Cursing AND Praising at the same time, for waking me and Then for Waking me, and not making a mess, and me Laughing at how Crazy it all was, but he is the one all other males will be judged against, because He did it ALL, Good And Bad!! And to think I didn't want him when waiting for a show quality female who had gone into heat, and wouldn't come near me, growling and hiding. I never got her, but the experience made me decide to have 2, a male and female to experience the differences the diff sexes have, and make me experience, with males liking to wrestle, and females a gentler touch. Now I can't be happy without one of each. A yr later I got a lookalike to the show qual fem, and She is the one all females will be judged against. A basket case when I got her, but I turned her into an Increadable hound, and when I wanted to end it all, with more pain and agony than This human could endure, She came over, looked at me, put a leg on the sofa, and Pushed me over to lay with me, which she never did before or after. Seeing us, my male who I trained to stay off the furniture DOVE in behind me and rubbed all over me, and I broke up laughing, and decided I Had to stay around to see the Show...
