...Young Man
The best poem
Is the one you write
For her...
The really her.
Better than the kinship
Of a shared sentiment
She may read
On a page of fame you give her
That shines on another author,
Hallmark moment.
Better than a gift
Of your fine crafted words
That reach her heart
Like an echo across a valley.
But are inspired by another…
Real or imaginary
Much better that
Your refrigerator quality words,
Are for her ears,
Not the great muse being
That inhabits your ears.
And meant for her eyes,
Not the goddess who
May shine from there upon you
And move your moon,
But words for the
Knowing and grateful eyes
Of your flesh and blood Woman.
It takes some of us a long time to learn this.

Thanks, Jan. The advice was for me, a once upon a time me, and I
wrote it for my wife, who knows I have learned the lesson.
