average sort of day

Posted by Jim H. [9712.4141] on October 22, 2007 at 15:28:50:

Here is my day so far: I fought high winds across the desert, starting
at 2:00 AM, hoping by putting off my trip back to California by twelve
hours I would miss the wind. No such luck. My truck was pelted with
vegetation and sand by eighty mph gusts at the base of Cajon Pass,
for those who know the geography here. The wind flipped a big rig at
the base of Lytle Creek.

Within an hour of my arrival in Corona, I had to take Gus, my cat of
eighteen years to the vet for…yep, be to be put down….another pet! I
got home to receive the news of Zarin at about the time phone began
ringing from relatives and friends who are fleeing their homes. The
air is thick with smoke, the wind is wild, and multiple fires have
people we know trapped in gridlock in the path of several fast-
moving fires, and it looks like the fires may burn to the ocean.

I talked to a friend in Fallbook as he frantically drove around in his 4-
by looking for a clearing for safety. Talking to me as he drove, he
said he was about to start driving through people’s fences to find an
open space. Fallbrook is dense with vegetation and canyons. All
roads out are jammed. I haven’t heard from him since.

We are upwind from the flames and safe, unless something starts
north of us, but we are getting heavy smoke from the fire in Big Bear,
across the valley. I am getting headachy breathing this air.

Other than that, it’s just an average sort of day.

Jim,

Terrible day indeed! So sorry about Zarin, Gus, your friend who is incommunicato, and the dangerous conditions. Is it possible for you to get the he-- out of there? Go north, go east, heck, go to Hawaii, but don't stay down there. If the flames don't get ya, the smoke might.

I'm in the Newport Beach area... it was so smokey this morning, even inside office buildings, the air quality was bad!

Sapphire,

You really should considering heading out of town for a while. I can imagine that the level of smoke is only going to increase, and it doesn't sound like there is much escaping it. Also, since you have been battling CFS, it might be even more important to remove yourself from that environment.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and others down there...

Holy catastrophe, Jim. Are you near Cosy Dell? I am trying to google the location. So, so, so, sorry. Your friend must be frantic. And, Gus.......shedding tears now. Please use caution. I don't know if you are leaving an apartment or your daughter's or dad's former place or what, but I hope you get out of harms' way asap.

hope you are wearing a dust mask. We had bad fires a mile from our home last year. My husband always leaves parked car windows open a crack and there was a layer of ash all over the inside of the cars when it was over. I coughed for days-guess some of the ash in the air got into my lungs. Now I keep dust masks in our emergency supplies.

I believe a moist mask would trap more stuff.
