What is it about the rain?

Posted by Jim H. [5199.4368] on December 01, 2007 at 07:44:42:

A soothing melancholy
Stops the world and wrings from the heart
A stillness, like after a sigh,
While the slapping splatter off the roof,
The hectic splashing of it,
Washes away the grime or our preoccupations
And unconscious deliberations.

Rain is a pause,
An instance of soul
A sense of closeness to something
Of the childhood experience
So lost behind us.

The holiness of a lifetime
Worn on our aging hands
Visits us in the rain

There is a rainbow moment of atonement
In the hush of a drizzle,
That longs to stand out in it,
Looking wet-faced into the eyes of a lover,
A memory we felt then
And can resurrect still.

The rain is healing to the earth and we feel the good effects too.

Very poignant Jim, and so appropriate for the season!

And for some reason, I had a vision of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman saying fairwell on that dark and drizzly night in "Casablanca". Must be the PMS. :-)

Thanks for the comments.

I am amused at some of the reaction from my faithful
correspondents elsewhere. I have always lived in fairly dry land, and
in the desert, rain can be a spiritual event bordering on the
miraculous. But for those in the moist northern climes, it may be a
somewhat less than numinous experience. I'm thinking that Sounder,
for instance, and our Brits here on the board are probably not so
taken by a little moisture. More likely, a sunny day is a launching
pad for their souls.

...in the approaching season, I could wish Walt and all of you the
experience of the sort of special and soulful moments that hide out in
the mundane, awaiting our notice.

Your poem is beautiful, Jim.

Yes those of us who live in the desert find rain wonderful! I also lived in Oregon for a while, and there was something magical about the rain there, too, that I didn't experience in other places.

Best wishes,
Jan
