Boy (girls can too)
Hollering to raise an echo,
Skipping stones across water,
Dragging a stick through the dirt,
Chewing on a grass stem,
Looking for shapes in the clouds,
Walking balanced, atop a fence,
Watching busy ants work, and
Keeping an eye out for pirates and monsters,
And giants.
Such high and solitary adventure,
This making something out of nothing,
This creative thumb-fiddling with nature,
Being the only one outdoors
On a wide-open Saturday.

Ahhh back in the day those things would have been considered
negative also, as opposed to farming and working.
It isn't kids that change but society and norms; and though being
nature deficient isn't a good thing - nor is seeing that kids are still
kids just because they also have technology doesn't negate that.

Michele,
That's not true.
Farmers have always let their kids play. After working of course. And the same should be the case with people NOW.
I don't think this is about too much time playing and less working, I think it's about alternatives to electronic games.

finding pug nose's from trees and putting them on my nose,
what we could find to entertain ourselves when there was no 24/7 Nicolodean and PSP's.

A beautiful, evocative poem. Thanks! I'll read it to my vidiots in the Winnebago.
