milestones

Posted by Jim H. [4489.6825] on February 15, 2009 at 08:36:24:

Don't you just love milestones, Walt? They are the lovely
"measuring stick" moments of life that, for me, also carry a little
apprehension with them. They are joyful transitions rites in the
timeline that we can relive through our progeny, like the first day of
school, first love, and first job .

Watching my grandson reminds me of my season ticket to life, my
free gift-pass to all the events of the temporary happening of my
existence. The apprehension part is about the "T" word (temporary),
and it gathers momentum as I venture deeper into the domain of
grandparenthood.

When the memory that connects me to my own youthful milestones
is touched by the celebrations of the newer generations, especially
family, I hear a song that could make angels weep joy. All this
because I just saw pictures and video of my grandson's first haircut.

My friend says I am a sentimental blob. I agree. He also says there is
a word the Jews have for the joy you get from grandchildren, called
nachis (nak-is) (with maybe a little mucous on the k.) So, I guess that
is what is behind my little outburst.

I don't think you're a sentimental guy, you're supposed to be excited about the little dude. I have my first grandson and he's only 6 months old--so I understand. And I can't wait for his first haircut!

I have felt the same way as an uncle during the first few months of my niece's life, watching her make the first tiny steps in this big world of ours.

Here's a wee pic, she's inherited the family's big blue eyes! :)

Thank you, Uncle Chris. So, I know you understand nachis.

You are still shy of the "first word" and "potty training" milestones,
but have probably been privy to early smiling and cooing. It's great,
isn't it?

And you appear to have a healthy uncle gene too, the one that
requires you to share photos. I have just such a grandpa gene which
insists I place a link (two ways...hope one works).

Oh, but I am sentimental, Ellen, and I've been known to be downright
syrupy when it comes to kids and animals.

Like Uncle Chris, you have a ways to go and milestones to pass before
you get to the haircut, although, you probably won't have to wait as
long as I have, since Jack will be four in July. For his mom, it was all
about preserving his gorgeous blonde locks.

Adorable. I love the name, too. I recommended the name Jack to my daughter when she was pregnant. I was overruled. He looks much older with his hair cut.

Oh, Jim,

You wrote a book? Congratulations! What's it called? Where is it available?

Best wishes,
Jan
