Movin' up the pop chart

Posted by Jim H. [2016.7907] on July 18, 2009 at 09:53:23:

Leaky gut has become all the rage out here in CA, Walt.  It’s more
popular than gout and tight belt syndrome, and has even earned its
own capital letter abbreviation for its banner.  LGS is gaining on
many of the chronic standby diseases, whose limited symptom-base
is proving unsatisfactory to the demanding West Coast population.
In fact, LGS appears to assimilate the other diagnoses as it passes
them, much as the Borg do. Resistance is futile.

As a budding celebrity, LGS has drawn the attention of the snake oil
crowd. Smooth talking money makers are already hawking one
bottle cure-alls for the catch-all disease.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you are not a hypochondriac or malingerer,
there really is something wrong with you, and it is LGS.  And I have
here, the one thing that will vanquish this scourge and free you to
live as you deserve.  Step right up and lighten your wallet.”

Imagine, everything that could possibly have anything to do with
LGS, included in any one of a dozen “silver bullet” elixirs offered
today.  Just perfect for today’s citizenry.  Radiant health, just a swig
away.

The miracle cures will no doubt fail profitably, but at least leaky gut
is out there in the marketplace, on the shelves, where disease
shoppers can find it.  And because of that, there is the chance that
LGS could become the malady of the era, for the reason that it is so
closely linked to our soul-sick society.

LGS is an expression of lacking consciousness, individually and
collectively.  Its causes and symptoms are indistinguishable, a
seeming paradox.  Paradoxes, it is known, are only resolved on a
higher level.  The same holistic approach that will alleviate LGS will
also alleviate much of humanity’s misery.

But couldn’t we get a better name for it, Walt?!  Jeez!  No ad exec
worth their salt would ever saddle such a promising pandemic with
such an undignified name.  How about Leaky Tao Syndrome?  That
would build a more positive brand recognition and create a little
pride among the sufferers.  LGS definitely needs management
overhaul.

Great post Jim

Have to say the LGS is in tough competition with Lyme disease while Candida and mercury fillings still fill the holistic coffers with billions a year. What is sad is that not only have the holistic people invented questionable disorders unscrupulous laboratories have arisen to provide the false - positive tests.

To prey on the suffering, give false hope and line their pockets further diminishes the real value of alternative medicine

Should would I want to be rich I would invent a "Cause" for some form of human suffering, then I would invent a cure...mind you none of it could be proven by scientific inquiry...then I would set up a laboratory to offer tests that only my laboratory knew how to do....and most of the patients who came to my lab would have the dreaded XYZ disease.

I would write monographs with unproven research and get testimony from people with high sounding credentials that are in reality just like "Expert" wittiness in a legal trial - paid talking heads.

Next I would line up testimonies from people that don't exist and then I would get some rube reporter to bring it to the media so others would know they may have XYZ

Then I could plan my next Mercedes purchase while fleecing the suffering having convinced my self I am for real (lie to yourself and others often enough and you will believe it)

Hi James, So I curious, do you feel LGS is a bogus illness? Or just over-diagnosed?

Here's my take on this. I respect James's opinion and I think he makes some very valid points. It's pretty easy to dismiss anything that is not recognized by mainstream medicine especially when many holistic practioners make a FORTUNE off of desperate people. I believe this happens because while some of the therapies are trully legit, the practioners know that the patient is desperate and this will not be covered by insurance and therefore can take advantage with ridiculous prices.

I for one believe that there needs to be SOME sort of scientific evidence. I recently read an article from MSNBC stating how a recent study showed that allergies may be all related to the gut. I have the link here from THIS website's archives of the article from 2004. I will post it below.

Sorry, the link didn't work. Here's the article pasted:

Allergies May All Be in the Gut, Study Finds

Wed May 26, 5:05 PM ET Add Health - Reuters to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Bugs in the gut may be causing many allergy symptoms felt in the head, from runny noses to trouble breathing, researchers said on Wednesday.

And antibiotics could be to blame, the researchers told a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

The findings could help explain the puzzling rise in asthma and allergies across the developed world in recent decades, the University of Michigan researchers said.

Antibiotics kill bacteria, but they can kill beneficial bacteria living in the intestines and colon. Many doctors recommend that patients taking antibiotics also eat "live" yogurt to replace some of these helpful microbes.

"We all have a unique microbial fingerprint-- a specific mix of bacteria and fungi living in our stomach and intestines," said Dr. Gary Huffnagle, an associate professor of internal medicine and of microbiology and immunology at the University of Michigan.

"Antibiotics knock out bacteria in the gut, allowing fungi to take over temporarily until the bacteria grow back after the antibiotics are stopped. Our research indicates that altering intestinal microflora this way can lead to changes in the entire immune system, which may produce symptoms elsewhere in the body."

Experiments on mice suggest that altering the balance of these so-called intestinal flora can affect the immune system.

"After antibiotics changed the mix of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract, the mice developed an allergic response in the lungs when exposed to common mold spores," Huffnagle said in a statement. "Mice that didn't receive the antibiotics were able to fight off the mold spores."

Huffnagle told the meeting that if the findings also hold true in people, they could help explain why asthma and allergies are on the rise.

"Anything you inhale, you also swallow," Huffnagle said in a statement.

"So the immune cells in your GI (gastrointestinal) tract are exposed directly to airborne allergens and particulates. This triggers a response from immune cells in the GI tract to generate regulatory T-cells, which then travel through the bloodstream searching the body for these antigens."

The immune system cells then block the development of allergic responses.

When antibiotics wipe out the bacterial population in the GI tract, yeast and fungi move in and multiply.

Fungi may secrete compounds called oxylipins, which can control the type and intensity of immune responses, Huffnagle told the meeting, being held in New Orleans.

Having too many oxylipins may prevent the development of the regulatory T-cells, in turn allowing for a hyperactive immune response against allergens such as pollen, he proposed.

Here's one more link with a study that showed how AIDS is linked to the stomach as well which puts together the theory or chronic diseases and how gut health plays a huge role.

Jim, I agree, they should have given LGS a better name... who comes up with these names anyway? :) Sapphire

Thanks, Jim.

In my experience, every new valid concept goes through a phase like this where the fringes latch onto it. "This, too, shall pass."

LGS just happens to be one of the major mechanisms that connect the brain to bodily dis-eases expecially through the newly appreciated mechanism of chronic stress effect. You will be hearing more about it in the future.

It surely does take a long time for a basic truth to perculate through the public. The "Tolstoy Effect" helps tell us why the most "learned" segment of our society are among the last to grasp it.

Namaste`

Walt

Hi Jim,

Nice to pop in here and see a piece by you.

How about:

GLAD - Gluttonous Lip to Anus Disease?

Knowing one has GLAD instead of LGS might help in the healing process: "Hey, I'm feeling my GLAD today; time to meditate."

Ok, I'll be quiet now and go back into my cave...

Nice to know you are still kicking, FW.

There is some little merit to your suggestion, FW, but "lip to
anus" sounds a bit like ass kissing. But, of course you meant
sphincter to sphincter, and you meant to be silly. You
suceeded room to spare. : )
