Kidney stones

Posted by Mary on May 14, 2002 at 10:53:17:

I Have just been diagnosed with a 8 mm kidney stone, I am curious what are the chances of passing it, or will I probably need surgery, and if surgery is needed how long is the hospital stay for kidney stone surgery?

My dad says that he just disolved his by drinking fresh squeezed lemons in water. I guess it's worth a try. He went in for surgery, three different times they tried to find it and then after one last CT scan they decided that it was gone. The Drs said that he passed it but he says that he disolved it. Be careful what types of Calcium you are taking. Tums w/ Calcium can cause these stones.

Hi, Mary.

NO ONE does surgery for a stone that size any more. They are all shattered with ultrasound machines designed just for that purpose and that is done as an outpatient.

What you need to do is question your doc about that and when the stone is passed, be sure to catch it (your doc or his nurse can explain how to do that), the laboratory analysis will tell you how to prevent the next one.

Let us know how you do and what you learn about the analysis.

Walt

Hi Mary,
My mom has had kidney stones for the past 20 yrs. Back in the day they did operate to remove them. Now, they use the laser machine that shatters the stones. My mom is actually going in for that procedure next Thursday. They have made such progress in the past years and it is now a fairly simple procedure. The last time my mom had this done was 6 yrs ago and we went shopping the day after!!! It is definately an outpatient procedure. I think you feel crappy that day and then it is progressively better after that. You are lucky you only have one stone. My mom has multiple stones in each kidney and both of her kidneys are enlarged. As for the calcium, the dr is usually able to tell what your stones are made of when you start passing the fragments after the procedure. I hope this helps!!!

What I meant by "safe" is a more absorbable type. When you don't absorb calcium then it ends up in other places of your body...like kidney stones.

If the stone is small enough, you can pass it by simply drinking water. I was given this advice by a Chineese herbalist: drink large amounts of water, try for two gallons in one day. I did it and passed two stones the size of dry kidney beans.

I am not sure ... I don't think he gave her the specific size. But, it depends on where the stone is located in terms of being able to pass it. They can tell that just from a simple, flat x-ray. My mom cannot pass hers, therefore, she has to have this procedure done.
