My significant other, Joleen, who is twenty six now, was diagnosed with focal glomerulosclerosis around ten years ago. This is a kidney disease in the realm of Nephritis. Symptoms are swelling because of a lose of protein in the blood, high blood pressure and cholesterol.
For the last year and a half I have been reasearching as much as I can on the disease and any possible alternative treatments. She has been eating as healthy as possible, taking mineral supplements and herbs and anti-oxidants periodicaly as our funds permit.
She is taking lisinipril or zestril for her high blood pressure but has weened from 40 mg a day to only 10. She stopped taking the Lipitor altogether because of our belief in a lack of causation between high cholesterol and heart disease, and the debilitating side effects.
Recently she went to the doctors to get a urinalisiys and blood work done and we have compared this with her last checkup to see if there has been any improvment. First of all the doctors said they were suprised she wasnt dead scince her total cholesterol is 591, LDL-506 and HDL-55 and they told her to get back on the Lipitor right away.
What is interesting though is that her imbalances are stabilizing such as her blood sugar is now normal and her minerals are in the proper ranges but she is still losing large amounts of protein in her urine.
The doctor called this morning and said Joleen needs to go to a Nephrologist scince her protein which is supposed to be in the 200 ranger is in the 7000 range in leaking through the urine.
There is next to nothing in any books or websites I search that discuss her disorder of Nephritis from an alternative or integrative perspective. So I am hoping that some one out ther has had experience with this before and can give me some sage advice. Otherwise she is told that she will just have to take the drugs they give her wich cause nasty side effects and dont do anything to help her in the long run and they will moniter her and tell her when she need dialisyis or a transplant.
When we saw Dr. Joel Wallach the mineral guy he told us that she needs to be on salt though the the doctors told her not to because it contributes to her swelling but he said salt wont cause swellin if she gets enough protein in her diet. Scince she is losing so much protein she needs to eat more even though we were also told by others that protein is hard on the kidneys so she needs to get off the protein.
So anyway we are perplexed. Is there any hope?

Hi Michele! From all my research, I've found that Kidney problems are a contributing factor to congested Liver and Gallbladder problems. Below is a list of congested liver symptoms so could you have your friend go down the list and see how many of these symptoms she is experiencing? This would be very interesting in my quest for enlightenment! Thank You! * S.H.A.P.E. *

The most accurate test for detecting a diseased (not congested) Gallbladder is a “Hide-A Scan”. Gallstones will not be detected on an x-ray or ultra-sound scan, until they are the size of a golf ball.
Old Sage doctors believed that when a patient was seriously sick, regardless if they were experiencing signs of cancer, heart disease, an autoimmune disease, etc., that the “Root Cause” was a congested or blocked Liver and Gallbladder, which occurred three to five years before the onset of their illness. By performing a simple Liver/Gallbladder flush, until all the stones are eliminated, this health problem can be reversed! * S.H.A.P.E. *

Thanks for the reply. Below are the answers you requested. If they help you in anyway let me know what you deduce! I'll start her on the liver/gallblader flush tommorow. The olive oil and epsom salt I presume. I was somewhat reluctant to do this flush with her because as I understood it, if the kidneys are not up to par then they would be hurt when trying to handle all the toxins that the liver/ gall bladder flush releases.

I have had liver and kidney problems though not the ones
you mention and wondering if Wallach gave any reason for
taking salt ? With one problem that I think came from
drinking water which I believe had chemicals in, I Needed
to take salt just to function in the heat or I would
becaome disoriented and Very weak and the salt brought me
back to life and not even feeling the heat and working
hard while sweat poured off me. The kidneys dump or
recycle a few things and it seems like mine were dumping
salt.
I had severe food and chemical sensitivities and was only
able to eat rice and little else or get severe, stabing
ear, eye, and jaw pains and oat meal stoped them in
minutes and they didn't come back. I think the B-6 in the
OMeal was the cure since that is said to be needed for
all liver functions.

Hi, Michael.
Remember the adage: "To a hammer, everything looks like a nail!" Think about it.
Without her knowing why this is happening--and the chances are that her conventional diagnosticians would admit to her (if she insisted) that they do not have a clue either--her only chance is serious wellness (home page for free protocol and archives for more info).
If her conventional physicians do know a specific cause, let us know what it is.

I dont remember specifically what Wallach said but I think it was along the lines of the below quote which I dont remember where I found it but I saved it for further review.
"The kidney has a delicate mechanism (called the renin-angiotensin system) for maintaining pressure in the blood vessels. Artificially lowering one element of the system (sodium) causes an elevated renin level, and thus the kidney works harder to retain the salt that it has. In other words, the hypertension is a sign that a hormonal system is out of balance, and thinking we can starve it into submission may be naive. Sodium is necessary enough that a major adrenal steroid hormone, aldosterone, is devoted to its regulation and retention. Many studies show the necessity of dietary salt, from population studies showing a tendancy toward shorter life span in people eating low-salt diets, to animal studies showing growth failure with sodium restriction. Multiple studies earlier this century showed fatigue and mental dulling to result from salt depletion diets."

what you quoted was what I learned when I was trying to
figure out why my dad had a massive heart attack soon after
he cut out salt because of the warnings in the early 80's
at the Same time that I had to take a Lot and every 15min
to play tennis in the heat. My dad told me I was crazy
to take any though HE looked like I felt when I didn't take
the salt but he just said it was hot. In CCU he told me to
DO what I wanted to since he did wnat They said to and was
the one who had the problem.
I went to a Dr to try to find out why I needed SO Much
salt, and he just said, If it works, use it. That wasn't an
answer so I searched and found out how the kidneys function
or tried to since it is pretty complicated. They are said
to regulate sodium, potassium, calcium, and bicarbonate for
the ph by either dumping or recycling them. I wanted to
know if my dad could have given himself his heart attack and
not till yrars later did I read that cuting out salt can
release renin Which I had read about and is what is
supposed to only be released when we need it, like when
geting up fast and runing up steps. It is said to keep blood
in the brain so we don't get dizzy But if salt is too low
then it is released to keep the BP normal and it Does it
by restricting blood flow and said to make the veins and or
arteries Lumpy to constrict them.
Wemen usually have less tolerance for salt since they
tend to retain fluid and don't sweat as much so I guess
she has to see what Works for her. I keep a salt shaker on
the coffee table so I can salt my food anytime since I eat
on the table often and watch TV. Soon after my and my dad's
problems, I started dating a health nut female and she told
me i used too much salt and called it poison. I Always
used a lot since I always did physical thigs, no matter the
weather. She called it Poison so I put a label on it with a
skull and crossbones on it for her. One nite we went to a
restaurant she Raved about and both ordere pea soup which
we both loved. I tasted it forst and it was TOO salty even
for me but I could tolerate it. I didn't tell her because
she thought that She liked the Good things and everything
she liked was The Best.. She tasted the soup and her eyes bugged out
but she didn't say a word but drank 4 glases of water to
get through the soup.
Salt is Only supposed to be a problem in Sa;t Sensitive
people which are said to be very few. Just like aspirin
sensitive people BUT you can't buy uncoated aspirins any
more and I Prefer them since I use aspirins for some
stomach problems like overeating. It bothered me till I
Remembered what Wallach had said about peoples stomach acid
sometimes not being able to dissolve the coatings on supp
pills and I started breaking or scraping coated pills to
see if they worked any better for things that helped me.
They usually just worked faster though some bothered my
stomach. I just break the aspirins now if I want them to
work in my stomach.
My mother did tell me that potassium tabs that she was
taking came out the way they went in so Wallach was right
about that happening sometimes.
