Kidneys (those lima-bean shaped organs)...

Dr. Stoll,

I posted here a few months ago with questions about my kidneys. I have been "waiting" to post more until I knew more about the "problem" But, I just read your response to the poor family with the 5-year-old grandson with nephritis, and also will be looking with interest at your answer to the questions re: LGS/parasite-death/kidney, and I thought maybe this would be a good time to ask some questions after all!

I learned in September, from a urologist, that although my kidneys and bladder look normal on ultrasound, I am excreting large amounts of protein and blood. Also BUN and creatinine of blood test are high, and I am apparently anemic. Urologist referred me to a nephrologist, I was in the middle of a re-location, and could not get an appointment in my new town until Dec 8. I thought that might be a good experiment time to see if I could affect any of the test values through SR, whole foods and exercise. (I had asked the urologist what could be causing my "problem" and all the possibilities that he listed sounded like autoimmune things to me -- so I was thinking LGS) I guess I'll know next week whether there's been any improvement, but, I am afraid, because, some of the symptoms that I have since come to believe are related still bother me though maybe not as much. They are: legs swell daily (probably not noticible to most people because they're very skinny when I first get up in the morning, but I have stretch marks on the skin over my calf muscles. And before two years ago I never had headaches, now every 2-3 months I will get a headache that starts in the evening or during the night and is very bad by the time I get up, so that the least amount of movement of my head will cause pain. I am also very nauseous and throw up when I have these headaches. They do not last more than a day. I do not have high blood pressure. It was checked today as part of the "work-up" for the upcoming nephrologist appt., and was 110/61

Are the headaches and swollen legs related to the kidneys? Are they all related to LGS? I waitressed for a number of years, and I thought maybe the leg swelling was just blown-out lymph valves (is that possible?) In spite of this long description of symptoms - I otherwise feel well. I never asked a doctor about the headaches because they are not long-lived or frequent. I did ask a couple of docs about the swollen legs (as that was a concern of my vanity) and one of them was even an emergency room doc who had the info about the urine and blood tests in his hands - so i would hope if they were related he would look into it - but - well, why would I expect that?...

I am trying very hard to understand all of this. I know that as of six or seven years ago a blood test did not show any kidney problems. These other things seemed to crop up all starting around 2 years ago. When I saw the post about using an anti-parasitic and developing kidney problems, it reminded me of the fact that I had used the strongest course of Lamisil just before these things began to manifest. I know that possible connection doesn't really matter at this point, except maybe for someone else's benefit.

I would appreciate anything you can advise me about. Since I am needing to see a doctor? (Nephrologist) I am going to call the 800 number you listed for doctors reading Functional Medicine...can you refer me to anyone in the Bloomington, IN, or Southern Indiana area? (area noted most recently for indicting Dr. Clark)

I want to thank you, too, for the board. Whatever else transpires, the changes I've been able to institute with this information have all been GOOD and have helped me very much. It has made all the difference in the world to approach this "problem" as something I can affect for the better, and to have something to DO towards that end! In fact, in order not to minimize that - I want to say that I began a course of rolfing a few weeks ago, and it seems to really have improved my ability to do good SR - which makes me feel high (for lack of a better description) In, fact, as I complete this post, I'm not so worried about what these recent tests might show!
(but please give me your advice anyway :o) )

Bless you, Dr. Stoll !

I think I kinda short-changed my little SR testimonial in yesterday's post. Saying that SR makes me feel high makes SR sound like a pot cigarette. I seem to have forgotten that before I started doing SR about 5 or 6 months ago, I was not sleeping much, and seemed to have some kind of anxiety disorder that was affecting my throat and breathing. It hurt so bad that I really thought I was dying. Sometimes my throat would spasm so that it looked like a frog's throat (if you've ever seen how they kinda rhythmically puff their throats) I guess I WANTED to forget that. I was truly exhausted. I hadn't really counted the SR I did during that first 3 or more months because I wasn't very good about it. In fact I think at first I only did it at bedtime (but that's what made me able to sleep). My progression has been slow and plodding, and I never gave myself much assistance to really get it all going. I got one massage. I probably could have used a dozen. So I think I've got a big ol' onion here - and I can say I basically feel OK at any time because I'm only looking at the layer that I'm peeling. I have made a couple of really major changes in my life that have brought me to this point where I am ABLE to do the wellness things. And I was probably enabled to do that through my initial practice of SR, however faultering. Also, my skin has improved. I think I even have to stop thinking of myself as someone with bad skin!

So, I am encouraged. So, this second post is for encouragement.

Thanks again.

Thanks, lisa.

Your sharing will help others understand that their MD's are missing the boat about chronic conditions.

Lisa,

Youu need the nephrologist!

Certainly "wellness" will help any chronic condition. However, what to do first will depend on your actual diagnosis and the nephrologist is your best bet to get that soonest.

From what you are saying here, it would be too much of a risk to try to reverse this with wellness alone without having the exact diagnosis AND knowing how far it has progressed.

Let me know what you learn, 12/8/99 is not too far away.

You will need the Functional Medicine Docs when you know your diagnosis.

Thank you for your sympathy and kind words Diana. I have a feeling I'm going to be OK.

It is really so wonderful that you can help your grandson and yourself in this way. From what I've been able to read about glomerulonephritis (one of the causes of these symptoms), when it appears in children it is much more likely to go into remission and even never reappear (I'm sure that assumes good care but I want you to be hopeful for him) My thoughts are with you and him and all your family!

Thanks again, Lisa
