male infant with a bladder infection

Posted by Maureen on March 13, 2001 at 02:46:28:

When my son was about three months old he developed a high fever and had foul smelling urine. His doctor did a urine culture and put him on antibiotics. The culture came back E coli and the meds helped after a few days. My son had an ultra sound of the kidneys and a test where they filled his bladder and filmed him urinating. The urologist found a small pocket on the outside of one of his kidneys, but said it was not the problem. He said my son had a weak bladder and was not emptying fully, which leads to the infections. Usually they would put my son on low dose antibiotics but I pursuaded them to let me try other means to keep the bladder healthy. My son is now five months and I put all this stuff in his cereal: unsweetend cranberry juice, liquid garlic, vit. C, flax seed oil, and a small amount of Herbs for Kids- Deep immune support Echinacea/Astragalus.
What do you think? Am I doing too much or leaving something out? So far he hasn't had a re-occurance of fever, but sometimes his diaper (urine) smells fouls. When he was on the meds. his urine was odor free. Thanks for any imput.

Hi, Maureen.

A pediatric urologist neds to be managing his case. This is unusual enough that no less a specialist can know what to do. Get copies of all his records and keep them at home. Take them to the urologist (pediatric only) and let him copy those he wants. You keep copies of ALL his records at home--including those of the new doc.

Every time you smell the strange odor he needs to have a urine check. There are even kits at the drug store that will let you dip a strip in his urine to see if he likely has an infection. His present doc should have already recommended this!

HOWEVER, if all that is done is more antibiotics he will finally be in worse trouble.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Thank you so much for answering my message Dr. Stoll.
My son, Carson, is seeing a pediatric urologist. All they really offer to do is put him on long term, low dose antibiotics. The MD said they were a very specific kind that mainly stop in the liver and do not reach the colon, which helps prevent some of the problems of antibiotics. If this is the ONLY way to prevent the infections, I'll do it, But, I'm trying to avoid that solution now before the traditional docs step in and insist on it.
Carson's urine almost always smells strange, before he got sick and now. I looked into getting the urine sticks and found that they were $100.00 for a box of 100. Which I would pay if I had to, but was hoping to find a good combination of supplements to keep him healthy. If stress relief is a major factor in health, than this kid has a lot going for him- he is a very happy, calm kid.
So.... I'd be happy to have a phone consult with you if you felt that would be best. What do you think of the stuff I'm using at the moment?(garlic, cranberry, vit. C, herbs) Thank you for any help.

Hi, Maureen.

I am disappointed in my profession. If that is the best a pediatric urologist has to offer........ (SIGH!)

What kind of vitamin C are you using?

ANY oral antibiotic will affect the colon. Any doc who says different is lying to you--hoping that you will not check it out! Has he noticed that the colon is part of the body???

The cost of the strips is about right even though they only cost the company about a penny each to manufacture. These have been available for at least 40 years and so are long past their patent.

I AM a little surprised that your pharmacist has not found a generic strip to save his customers some money. Surely, with that much markup, some company has made a generic. Of course, the pharmacist makes more money the more expensive the item is and since there is little demand for this item, he may just not have bothered finding one. The amount of money the pharmaceutical companies is making is obscene.

The only other thing I would have to suggest would be a perfect wholefoods diet. We are not yet sophisticated enough to know what YOUR child neds for perfect health and so organic and refined foods will at least give your child the opportunity to get what hs needs for his best immunity.

IF you are still nursing, it is YOU who will need to eat that kind of diet.

Also, go to the homepage of this 'site and read "The Modern Medical Interpretation of Stress".

As he gets a little older, you can help this by doing Deborah Rozman's classic: "Meditating with Children".

Hope this helps.

Walt

Maureen,

One more thing:

If he were mine, I would find a good Chiropractor AND a good Naturopath to serve as consultants and as his primary practitioners.

I do not mean to say that the antibiotics he is getting may not be necessary at this point. However, from what you have reported, that conventional medicine has found out about his urinary tract, it is unlikely that that combination would not be able to minimize his episodes.

Let us know how he does.

Walt
