Patella Femoral Syndrome

Hi,
I'm only 15 and I was diagnosed with Patella Femoral Syndrome in January of 2002. I tried Physical Therapy, and that did not help me, but made it worse. The knee braces I have tried really do not work. My doctor then referred me to a Orthapedic Surgeon. I'm about 30 pounds over-weight, and the whole time I was there he told me Patella Femoral Syndrome is caused by being over-weight. From the research I've found it is not caused by that. I play softball, and the pain is so bad that I sometimes feel like I'm gonna faint. My family doctor prescribed me Celebrex, and that helps, but not enough. What should I do? Should I get a different Orthapedic surgeon? I want to continue playing softball, but I need to do something about the pain. Does anyone have any ideas for me? If so, please e-mail me at Melvt04@aol.com Thank you so much!

Ahh so coincidental.. just as i read MY post i see yours Melanie. I was just diagnosed with Petella fem arthritis. My doc prescribed an anti-inflamatory also - he didnt say that i was over weight. but i know, that if i gain anymore weight that i am at now-- my knee will hurt more. actually i noticed this fact - years ago when i began having babies. too much weight - is a fact - for me - hurts my hurt knee. I also take glucasime/condroitin sulfate which helps much, also SAMe. They are purchased at the Vitamin Shoppe. I do high impact aerobics at least 3 x's weekly - but have cut out on the other 3 days at the gym due to my knee. I plan to continue with 6 days - God willing. If you would like to chat.. just Email me or message me on aol. bye, susan

Hi, Melanie.

Listen to Susan.

Excess weight does not cause this but it surely does aggravate it.

Losing it is one of the most effective and easiest (hard as it is to lose weight) ways to help this problem.

Next, you should only do underwater exercises. ANY town with an indoor pool now offers classes in this.

Finally Chiropractors have had singular success in "realigning" weight bearing to help this very problem. You need to at least get a consultation from one.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
