I am 41 yrs. old, active but carrying a few extra pounds, and have never had a knee problem. Lately there is swelling in my right knee below the kneecap and a constant 'ache.' I have been running to lose weight, but stopped when the swelling began. I have a very athletic past with no prior problems. What could it be?

Hi, Susan.
Switch to underwater exercises and get rid of the weight.
Your knee is warning you that it is wearing out and you have little time to save it from chronic arthritis.
You might also start looking at the archives about bracing and arthritis to gain sufficient information about the most common causes that might help you in the long run.
In the meantime, I would consider glucosamine sulphate 750 milligrams twice a day to help repair the damage.
Let us know what you learn and how you do. If you do not see some results with this in a week I would at least get your knee examined.

I have a knee that has done this occasionally since they removed a cyst from it about 12 years ago. I can completely eliminate this reaction by combining strengthening exersises for the knee/legs and stretching. A temporary help for me, the only thing that worked, was topical DMSO - but that will only keep the pain at bay until more permanent changes are made.
