Dr. Stoll,
I have read through all archives and the glossary. Interesting and heavy topic related. Read them several times. I am going to wellington orthopedic doctors for the 3rd time. I was diagnosed with Bakers Cyst. I awoke almost 2 years ago to find my right knee enlarged. I went to our local physical therapist because I was doing strength training to try and help my legs. ( this same knee was pulverized 18 years earlier in a car accident no surgery just tried aspiration to reduce fluid and casted for 6 weeks) anyway... I was worried about arthritis and knew weight and strength traing would help ... he saw it and said no my knee usually didn't look like that.. I saw a doctor who did an mri and then he didn't tell me what it was but said i would be alright.. of course much of the swelling decreased. however there still remains this knot. on the outside of my right knee, it is about the size of a big plum larger than a golf ball my whole knee looks like it is out of whack and I think it is throwing my whole balance out of align. anyway about 6 months later I asked for a second opinion and that was may 2001 the doctor i saw did another xray and had the mri there... he gave me a cortisone shot and wrapped it and said to stay off for 5 days. He mentioned something and said if that didn't work he WOULD NOT OPERATE.... that i would have to live with it. well I am going back because as I said that it still is the same.. no i do not have pain told them all i never did have any pain.. I did after he gave me the shot of cortisone.. It did not do anything.. I just wonder is it normal to have a bakers cyst for this long and NEVER GO AWAY..
I find it interesting about the SR and the leaky gut and the rest of the stuff. I knew I do not eat a whole foods diet. but have always been interested in NO SUGARS AND WHOLE GRAINSL ( THIS Is the philosphy of le leche years ago)
but then find it interesting that you mention in lgs that
wheat is a no no and dairy. I understand the dairy but why wheat if whole food s would be grain.
Still have a hard time understading.
You state the only way to get rid of bakers is to do surgery
then why won't this doc do it?
I am going to ask but wanted to hear from you
then after the surgery the only way to keep from returning is the diet and the sr?
I do drink daily that is my fault but seem to enjoy my glass of wine with my meals.. if you know what i mean?
the bracing i was confused with till your glossary defined. I thought the ace bandage was bracing. in some of the articles you said that it was but then explained it as more
"unconscious" tension bracing. did I misunderstand that?
so the ace bandage ( in an article you said if aced entire leg not just the knee) otherwise bracing.???
I thought perhaps the shot didn't work because of the ace bandage.
I don't think mine was a tear/// however if arthritis is to blame would that be areason not to operate. is arthritis also the bakers cyst?
I appreciate hearing from you.. i couldn't get to the web site about the book ( used) because i got page not found but was able to locate 3 older copies did n't mention all 3 names. would this version be ok

What do you mean "knee was pulverized"? Your original injury will determine what is going on now.
Both the dairy and the wheat are only bad for those who are hypersensitive to them. This is an immunological response only in susceptible individuals.
Without knowing more, only glucosamine sulphate, 750 milligrams twice a day will help.

the pulverized kneecap occured in Sept. of 1982. I was driving a van and ran into aother vehicle. The key in the ignition hit my knee. I was 8 months pregnant at the time. I was told the knee was pulverized. due to the amount of inflmation a temp cast was on till one week later. I returned and the doctor tried to aspirate the amount of fluid he used 2 different size needles. But it would not work, So he casted the leg. From the ankle to the hip. I had this on until right after thanksgiving. Recd 2 pt treatments then delivered my baby girl. Follow up was not required miraculously I was able to bend my knee... Talk about mind over matter. (HEE) I have had no additional problems with my right knee to date other than awakening to find this huge swelling and after the swelling subsided. Probably because when I went to the doctors office he saw it and checked both knees. advised for an MRI. which i did 3 days later ( Iwent on a friday and by monday the swelling decreased, he was poking and pushing at his office I think it did somehting... who knows) I almost did not go for the MRI but did that monday. I had to return to his office I think it was like a thursday. He at that time said it was nothing and probably the additional swelling would go down. Did I need anything for pain. NO DOC NO PAIN.
Since this knot I think I told you on the outside but it is really on my right knee on the inside so as if both knees touch... it is about the size of a large plum. Hard as a rock my h0le leg looks like the knee goes inward and my leg appears out of whack, MY Description..
I have an appt. this friday with the doctor at wellington. I do notice that it is losing its strenght.. like trying to get up on the right leg not as strong as the left. Lately even my right hip and lower pelvis ache upon long sitting... such as driving or riding in our boat..
same difficulty trying to get back in once out of the boat.
I still have this large knot (bakers cyst) I was told when I called to talk to the nurse with welllington.
Since this has been going on I just thought you could provide me with an insight as to exactly what can be done and how to fix it?
any help would be appreciated.

I have previously stated to you that I went for a second opinion ( same group of doctors just the doc I had been seeing all along was out of town when I went the first time)
Dr. Welch is the one I have been seeing for 19 years. anyway, when this knot on my knee (note it is the outside not behind not in front but on the side of my knee) didn't go away and friends family and associates all saw it they say " MY GOD WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOUR KNEE? DOES IT HURT YOU SHOULD SEE A DOCTOR!" AFTER too numerous mentions,
mind over matter does affect oneself and I requested the visit with dr. welch to see what he thought..
And as I said that was like a year and 1/2 later..... I remember the date because I was invited to a wedding for my good friends daughter... thus..when I went to the office another xray..even though they had the mri pics he saw me and I NEVER WAS TOLD WHAT WAS WRONG.... just that he mumbled something.. and said we can give you a shot (for the pain I believe he stated) but I WILL NOT OPERATE.!!!!
I thought the shot was going to be in my arm... not in my knee... after getting this shot of cortisone. that is when I had pain... I was ace bandaged and then told to stay off. which I did.. thus no fun at the wedding..
I THOUGHT FROM READING YOUR ARTICLES THE ACE BANDAGE DIDN'T WORK..(BRACING) but then I read elsewhere that is not what you meant... I think
I guess... my questions to be frank
Is this really an 'BAKERS CYST?
Is the only way to 'GET RID OFF THE CYST ' TO OPERATE.;THEN WHY NOT? COMPLICATIONS WITH THE PROCEDURE?
WHAT IS THEN THE ALTERNATIVE?
WHY GLUCOSAMINE?
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A CASE LIKE MINE.. ALL RESEARCH DOES NOT INDICATE SO. THUS MY CONFUSION!
ANY HELP ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE BECAUSE I GO TO THE DOC'S FRIDAY AM.

This is a perfect example why it is SO important that everyone have copies of ALL their medical records in their home for the rest of their lives.
The actual injury is SO critical to understanding what is going on now that you would be wise to GET those records from the 1982 doc. Lots of times docs exagerate the extent of injuries so when the person does better than suggested the doc can take the credit.
If your knee had actually been "pulverized" the symptoms and treatment you described would be ludicrous. Two months of the long leg cast would have resulted in your knee completely fusing (one bone from hip to ankle) and you would have never been able to bend it again forever. The treatment you are describing does not even indicate a fracture.
The swelling you are describing now (rock hard) cannot be a Baker's Cyst which would be "cystic"--which means soft and squishy.
Without the old records, the second best info would be the actual current MRI report.

I am concerned now about what you state regarding PULVERIZED KNEE CAP. True I do not have records this is the same doc who treated me for the pulverized kneecap. Being that Iwas huge stomach wise I mean. I really didn't see. I am going off my memory. Which I stated I was in a brace at first tillhe tried to aspirate all the fluid around the knee cap. ( I did not see my knee at time of injury, more worried about going into premature labor) but my husband said it looked awful my whole knee at that time was out of shape,
After the short period of time ( I think it was several weeks) that is when he tried to aspirate it. It didn't work I think he said it clotted or something to that effect.
But you are saying that if it was pulverized i would not be able to use it? Then if not I don't know > I just called the office to make sure my records from 82 regarding the accident and I did go to Christ Hospital and I wil contact if he doesn't have to see if they still have it.
I know that I had the cast on all through October , because we went to a halloween party wearing the cast at that time.
so I had to have it on partly through november.. so that would be almost 2 full months. I believe I had the cast removed and the brace again was worn, ( velcro with the hole in the knee,,,similar to what my son had to wear for oshgood schlaters..)
as soon as I get those records I will advise//
I do know that they are saying Bakers Cyst because of the MRI> which I can get ...but then what?
and I do walk...

I am operating without sufficient facts here,
However, even just a patella fracture requires surgery and long term physical therapy, Neither of which you had.
Hope you can find those records, If the doc no longer has them, the hospital where the MRIs were taken should have it on microfilm.

It is not a bakers cyst. It Is a Pes Anserinus Bursae.
usually not as big as mine is..
the doctor did answer most of my questions. I don't know why the nurse told me bakers cyst.?. But Dr. Welch said no it is not a bakers cyst. He said he thought he explained everything to me at our last visit, in May.. I said well you explained that there was fluid in a sac causing swelling but never told me the name. Yes operation is considered. Purely personal. NO pain, but he will remove the sac if I so desire. Need to do more research.
I will optain my files they are archived I need to order them. Let you know later what I decide and exactly what my humble little knee went through. Dr. Welch really doesn't recall what it was back then, He told me I worry too much and I probably am one of his most healthy patients.

This is an unusual condition called "goose foot". Of course this is on your knee but, if you look it up, you will find that is what this is called.
I have never seen a case so I do not know if removing it would help you.
Let us know what you learn and how you do.
