Dear Colleagues, I can't seem to get rid of some pain around my left knee. I've had it x-rayed, some arthritis present but not much. Done the physical therapy thing, which doesn't seem to help much. My problem is that my knee is pretty much OK until I walk a couple of blocks or stand around, like at a party. Then a pain sets in behind and on the side of the knee. It isn't so bad that I can't play tennis, though I can't run like I could before the pain showed up. Only other clue is that the knee feels very slightly swollen after a hot bath. Helpful comments entitle the offerer to complimentary drinks in my French Quarter courtyard. Thanks.

the only way I can keep it from hurting is lots of stretching -- however nothing can compare to yoga. If I'm doing my yoga, it doesn't hurt a bit. If I'm doing my physical therapy stretches, it only helps somewhat. I wonder if Tai Chi would do the same thing.....

Harry, I would agree with LT. I have to do stretching exercises every morning and have determined that my thigh muscle gets tight on that leg when walking or especially standing. In my case I know bracing plays a part. Good luck

Dave,
Pains I got below my knee cap are said to be weak thigh
muscles or an imbalance between quads and hamstrings and
straight leg raises are said to help.

It sounds as if you have Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome. This is a common problem runners experience, and can be overcome. Try to look at running injury books and websites. It is often caused by a muscle imbalance, similar to what Vince F said.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I'm on my way to find a Yoga class, and start industrial strength stretching.

Hi, Harry.
For arthritis to show up on something as simple as an xray, it has to be pretty far advanced. There is NO doubt that this is your problem.
Go to the archives and read up on arthritis and related subjects.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Look up Baker's Cyst.
It causes a lot of pressure behind the knee which in
turn can cause radiating pain into side of knee, or
even down into calf.
Fluid from knee (front) leaks through back and creates a
pocket or 'cyst' full of fluid.
You would feel it more and more as you keep walking.
To the touch, there is a soft raised mass on back of leg
behind knee.
Best wishes & God bless.

Dear Dr. Stoll, I read and enjoyed yur book. Your arthritis suggestions are persusasive ( your vinegar for toenail fungus suggestions works !!!! ) I was less persuaded by your theories about modern environmental and electromagnetic stresses producing disease. That sounds like a real stretch to me. Given that people live much longer today than when we weren't exposed to all of these stresses, looks like you could conclude that they are actually contibuting to our longetivity. But enough, your running this web page is an outstanding service to all of us.

I am not sure about electromagnetics but I know chemicals
can cause a lot of problems. It took a poisoning or 2 to
damage me but becoming sensitive to many that didn't bother
me before tells me they are related. Either I was lucky or
had a resistance to them by some luck of genetics but have
seen youngsters be affected more easily and a break from
toxic loads probably help recovery but they probably add up
or weaken the system. I have always used as a guide that if
something is irritating or annoying to get away from it but
even things that don't that much could weaken us. Asbestos
and lead didn't make everyone sick and may not affect some
people as fast as others or at all but some will be very
sensitive and Sensitivity seems to be the key in most things
since after the med community comes out with a strong
warning they back off and say that Only sensitive people
need be concerned but sensitivities Do come on for differnet
reasons or loads of the item. How careful or worried we
should be depends on us. I have a low tolerance for
alcohol but have friends who live on it.

Hi, Harry.
I appreciated your comments. These are not MY theories, although I would love to take credit for them. They are facts documented by the world's greatest (so far) expert in the effects of CHRONIC stress accumulation on the human physiology: Hans Selye, MD. Take the time to read his book "The Stress of Life" and THEN tell us what you have learned.
Since you have an open mind you will really enjoy being brought up to date on this concept.
Many ACUTE stresses are beneficial. It is only the gradual accumulation of stress-effect (that one cannot discharge by running of fighting immediately) that changes how our systems work for the worse.
Namaste`
