Cracked Patella/Knee Cap

Posted by
Rena on March 05, 2001 at 12:23:47:

I have a cracked patella. I had surgery 2 years ago to
clean up the cartlidge that got caught in my knee joint.

I fell in my exercise class. (Not on my knee but with that
leg) and now my knee is swollen and aching. What can I do
not to have surgery again? Besides quitting class... Thanks..

Hi, Rena.

The treatment for a cracked patella is a cast to take the tension off the patellar tendon. If such has not been recommended, you are at risk of it separating completely and requiring surgical pins being placed in the patella.

Your doc can tell you how many pounds of tension there is on this tendon with each step (many thousands) and within 10 days (of the crack) the calcium will have been absorbed from the site of the crack (in preparation for healing) and the bone will be at its weakest.

Dr. Stoll,

Thank you. However, it is too late for me to get a cast.
My Dr went in and cleaned up the loose cartlidge from the
crack and left it as is. I would like to know what
preventive things I can do to save the cartlidge I still
have in the knee. I am only 30 and very active and I still
experience pain after work outs, cold temperatures and
driving on long road trips. Thanks

Hi, Rena.

The only things I know would be underwater exercise at least 3 times a week (See your indoor public pool for programs.); the essential fatty acids in the home page articles; glucosamine sulfate (750 milligrams twice a day) & consider MSM.

If you are overweight--lose it.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
