The weight probably makes a difference if you are a male or female I would think. If the doc wants you to lose 40 or 50 pounds, he thinks you are a female probably.

Yes, I was thinking that 5'8" and 170 was not really heavy for a man. 40-50 lbs would make this person skeletal. And even for a woman, 5'8" and 120 would be very thin. I'm 5'2" and my perfect, healthy weight is 120.

I am a female and 120 to 130 lbs. for me would be a size 5, which is very thin for my frame. At 5'8", 170 lbs I wear a size 12 now. About 140 to 145 lbs. is an ideal weight for me. So that's only 25 to 30 to go... LOL! I am going to try Dr. Stoll's suggestions for the essential oil and supplements and then go see another dr. for a 2nd opinion. And start eating better too!

Hi, Sally.
The reason I suggested so much weight loss is because, with this condition, every extra ounce is damaging until she gets this back under control. Once she is asymptomatic for a year she could seek her "healthiest weight".
Hope this helps everyone understand.

Thanks Dr. Stoll - I don't think that 120 would be an "unhealthy" weight, just really thin which sounds good to me (easier said than done though). I'm off to a good start this week of healthy eating and I've been swimming a little (I'm in Florida).
Regarding the swelling, I talked to my doctor this morning so I could get more info as to what the heck is causing my knee/ankle trouble. He thinks that the degenerative changes in the knee were so minor that it's probably not the cause of the swelling. He said that it could be a number of things, but the basis is that there is a blood flow problem. One scenario is that the calf pain could have been a result of small veins closing and that would cause the foot and ankle to swell and maybe with support hose the blood flow may begin to redirect to other veins and the swelling would cease. This sounds great to me, but it doesn't explain the swelling behind my knee. He also said the other area of concern is that the veins in the right leg are connected to the renal system and that with swelling in the knee and the calf it could be a result of a problem there, but I haven't had any pelvic pain or other obvious symptoms. He said his advice is conservative - to wear the support hose for a month to see if the problem improves, but to call him if any new symptoms occur before then. If nothing has changed in a month he will then refer me to a vascular surgeon.

Of course, Marlo, the question is still WHY isn't it?
The support hose is not a bad idea for now, so long as it does not go higher than an inch below the knee crease in the back.
The veins in the right leg are no more connected to the kidneys than are the ones in the left. See any anatomy atlas.

Dr. Stoll,
I've been wearing the support knee-hi's for almost a few weeks now and nothing seems to have changed with my knee and ankle. Over the past week I've noticed that my right armpit is now swollen, but I don't feel any lumps and it is not red or irritated in anyway. Just swollen. Could this be related?

Hi, Marlo.
This MAY be connected. I hope not. You need to be examined while it is happening and your concerns need to be voiced.
Let us know what you learn.
