Dr. Stoll...my dad will be having a full knee replacement in a couple months. He is 78 and in excellent health. He exercise regulary non drinker and smoker and is only on BP meds. With all of this, what is your opinion? Do you think he can handle this? Is there a LOT of pain after this type of surgery? He's an avid golfer, how long before he can actually get out there and golf again after this surgery? Thank u

If he were younger, I wouldn't suggest it at all......the surgery is fairly traumatic, meaning that it will take some time for him to rehibiliate the knee and get the muscles and range of motion functioning. Perhaps a month or so of physical therapy. Not before, but after the surgery, taking systemic enzymes (Wobenzyme), glucosamine/MSM, and SeaCure, can help speed up the recovery.
For your information, some people are avoiding knee replacement surgeries by having injections of synvic into the knee (acts as lubricant), taking cartilage-building supplements, and getting a treatment called "Prolotherapy" that can help stablize the ligaments of the knee, and can even regenerate articular cartilage. Studies now published PROVE That this therapy regenerates articular cartilage. Go to www.google.com and type in prolotherapy. There is a ton of information on it.

I would also try cod liver oil to suppliment the
synovial fluid and the other things that HY mentioned.
I have found that different brands of MSM have helped
different things so they Must be different. The only one
that helped my knees was Natrol brand and I had to take
glucosamine/chondroitin at least close to taking it and the
brand I took was Nature's Bounty so if he tried them trying
different brands might work if others didn't.

All joint replacement surgery is tramautic, and sometimes provides only limited relief. How bad are his knees, does he have ANY joint space left? MD's just love doing joint replacements, but be wary. HY's suggestion of prolotherapy should be considered, as should following the arthritis protocol outlined on this BB by Robert McFerran. Robert treated his own RA, but according to Dr. John Mansfield it also helps OA as well, and all of this is discussed in the old postings. Also, I note that you dad has elevated BP. I have osteoarthritis and I have elevated BP as well. So do a whole lot of other people with OA that I have talked to. I would suggest that there is a systemic problem with your dad (and me and others) who have both OA and elevated BP. To address that I would urge liver detox and SR, if he will do it. I will levae it to Doc Stoll to tell us the degree to which he may be helped at his age, this I cannot comment on. Good luck.

Hi, Leslie.
Listen to Tom, Vince and Helping You.
I would certainly try all their suggestions before going to the surgery. THEN, if he is not better in a year, perhaps.
Remember, as soon as he has had the surgery he will be obligated to at least 2 years of intensive physical therapy.
In the meantime I would suggest he learn about the underwater exercise programs his community has. ALL communities with indoor pools have these available for the public.
Let us know how he does.
