Daughters stomach and migraines

Posted by Phil on May 20, 2002 at 15:27:41:

Hi, my 11 year old daughter has had stomach problems for the past two and a half years. She has been treated for H.Pylori, even though the tests didnt show it, twice. She seems to get better for a while but the nausea and vomiting always come back. Recently she has started with migraines and they are migraines she has seen a doctor. But she gets horrible headaches all the time(her eyes are fine) almost every other day sometimes every day. It was just migraines every two or three weeks, then every week now this. She has had thyroid, diabetes, etc. test done and all show fine. From a blood test the only elevated thing was some kind of bone test. My wife and I started a month ago limiting her food. She gets no dairy, yeast intake for three weeks was almost zero if not zero, no red sauce and she drinks bottled water. This seemed to help for a week or so but now things are back to where they were only worse with the headaches, nausea etc. Any help, hints, opionions, or suggestions would be appreciated. The doctor seems to think she needs to see they gastroenterologist yet again, I dont think that will make much of a difference from what we had done last time. thank you.

I had a similar issue with the migraines and stomache pains with my son when he was about the same age. You definitely need to eliminate all forms of dairy. Many products such as pancake mix, crackers etc have casein , a dairy product in them. Your best bet is for the entire family to go on a PWFD. This way everyone is doing it not just your daughter. The other thing that I would recommend eliminating is wheat. In addition you need to find a good MD that does holistic and or enviromental medicine. Many times there are hidden allergies that make everything else worse. Also the Dr may recommend certain supplements that can help with these issues. I would also recommend taking her to a chiropractor for the migraines. Many times they can give relief and break the cycle. If you let the board know the area that you live they may have some recommendations for Dr's that you could go see. Hang in there and you will find a solution for your daughter.

PS: we were told that many times in children of this age that these stomache aches are really what they call stomache migraines. Has your daughter had the Hepatitis B vaccine? Did these problems start up any time around the
of the vaccinations?

Hi Phil,
I agree with the woman who recommended dairy and wheat free for your daughter- very much so. When you're daughter does have a migraine you can try a washcloth soaked in boiling water (as hot as she can comfortably tolerate and only if it helps and she feels okay with it) on her forehead while she is in a dark and quiet room. Or an ice pack at the back of her neck. Some people find one or the other- heat or cold- helps. Reducing the input (noise, smells, stress, light) for 48 hours can be very, very helpful. If she is triggered by stress at school or otherwise, sometimes talking to de-stress can help as well-just having someone listen. With de-briefing this way, I've managed to stop several migraines before they got started full swing (it takes practice to realize when they will happen, and I still don't know all the time). I also find relaxation on a daily basis helpful- relaxation tapes or CDs are especially helpful. You might try to find ones she especially likes. It took me a long while to find ones that were especially helpful - I will recommend (if you and her physician think this would help) Pain Control by Changeworks - it is a self-hypnosis (light) tape that helps you to control your own pain through visualization. I also like the HemiSync CDs (relaxation music). Also consider hormonal changes. I wish her healing-
All the best,
Heather

I used to have a lot of migraines and my son inherited them from me. One of the students who worked for me in my daycare had lots of problems with her stomach; nausea mostly. We all changed our diets a little and improved significantly. We don't have migraines anymore and Courtney's stomach doesn't give her any problems. E-mail me if you like.

Hi, Phil.

Listen to Cheezi, Heather & dmaryd.

She at least has LGS, probably has C-RS and certainly has severe bracing. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.

See the archives for bracing options.

Unfortunately, she is right in the middle of the least likely age to learn SR. Perhaps, if she is suffering enough she will be willing. Ask your library to find you a copy of Deboreh Rozman's "Meditating with Children".

Let us know how she does.

Walt

This is a stressful time for girls at this age. Cliques are forming and sometimes girls can be downright mean toward each other. Is it possible she is experiencing this at school? You have to get her talk about issues that are bothering her. Turn this situation around and look at it as a good time to establish a good foundation for communicating with her.

Alan, she has suffered with this for almost three years. The school problems are Zero, thank god. Thanks though for mentioning this, we have two older daughters so we know all about these things with the cruelty they can inflict on each other. Again, I wish these were the problems she was dealing with, at least they would be with in our control.

Thanks for the info. And yes we have changed the diet and ordered Dr. Stoll's book and have been trying to locate the Meditating with Children book. The diet seemed to make her feel better, more energy lets say. But the problems still exist to this day. Stress, yes i believe stress is now playing a part in the migraines and why wouldnt it after three years and two doctors and an unmentionable amount of medacine. She has a fish tank in her room, aromatherapy candle, and a five things your thankful for book. She spends 20 minutes a night in her room relaxing by watching the fish and writing in her Thankful book she sleeps well every night. But again, things are no better with the nausea and headaches.

Hi, Phil.

Of course there is a amall chance that they may be neurological. However, it was MY impression that this had already been checked out.
