Crunchy Foods Question (To HY)

Posted by Jane on June 17, 2002 at 10:08:10:

HY-

I have been working on my LGS problem now for 13 weeks (diet, SR, exercise, PD, FloraSource and digestitve enzymes). By paying close attention to my body over this time period, I have found that crunchy/hard foods seem to really set off my problems. Foods like nuts (any kind), seeds, carrots, snowpeas, apples with the skin, popcorn, and strawberries (seeds) cause both colon spasms and mild pain and gas. At first I thought I might be allergic or hypersensitive to nuts, but I've found that I can tolerate the nut butters just fine.

I understand the premise of leaky gut, but what could this crunchy/hard foods intolerance mean regarding my *specific* form of LGS? Do you have any insight or suggestions on how to treat this particular form? (By the way, I had a colonoscopy about 5 months ago, and they found nothing there such as diverticulitis.)

Also- one other question...what does it mean when you have gas with no odor? I realize that gas with an odor indicates bad bacteria, but what about with no odor? Is it harmless? Or is gas ALWAYS an indication that something is wrong??

Thanks!

My chiropractor once told me to avoid anything with rough edges while I was treating LGS. He said that nuts, etc., can irritate the already sensitive mucosa of the intestinal lining and cause gas and discomfort. Apples are another story, I think. I get the same reaction as you -get very bloated and gassy from eating them. I don't know why, though, sorry.

Hi Jane,

This is VERY common and here is the cause:

Eating too many soft or refined foods over the years!! Eating soft foods or refined foods causes the digestive system to get lazy. My advice, is to stay on a whole foods diet of foods in the form you tolerate best. When you are feeling normal again, start SLOWLY increasing the amount of "harder" foods in your diet. Always slow down or stop if the symptoms are returning. Over time, your body should get used to it.

During LGS, the digestive system is very sensitive and many "rough" foods can often irritate the digestive system. The diet I outlined in a post a few weeks ago is probably the best way to go until the digestive system is stronger. You might also be getting bloated from intestinal bacteria fermenting the fiber. Like I said to Jane, always change your diet slowly so to avoid reactions. Soaking nuts and grains can help you to digest them more. If you STILL can't tolterate them, they are simply best avoided until your LGS is under control

Thanks for your comments. I'm not having as much trouble as I used to, thank goodness - only occasionally. I'm doing pretty well with nuts and raw rough foods, but apples are another story. Why do they make me so gassy?

I think it was on Dr Mercola's site that I read that some people have a reaction to apples and have to eat a protein with it. If I remember right, I think he suggested a nut butter with apples for those people

You could be reacting to waxes on the apple, or bacteria could be fermenting the sugar. Are you using ONLY granny smith apple?

Also, I Barbara has good info :-)
