infant with "hangover breath"

Posted by Elizabeth on September 21, 2002 at 03:54:41:

Dear Dr. Stoll,
My 13-month-old son has breath like an alcoholic's. Today is the first time I have noticed it, but his stools have had a very different odor for a long time. They're loose and acidy or yeasty-smelling. About a month ago, he started pooping 3-4, maybe 5x/day. Lots of diapers to wash!
He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, no belly aches.
He DOES have detectable lead levels in his blood, we found out this week. We live in an old house. He also powerharfs sand and soil--two-fisted eating, or he lowers his mouth into it to more efficiently graze.
I'm doing everything I can think of to curb this behavior, but wonder about possible connections between these wierd behaviors/symptoms.
As for the breath, we rarely have alcoholic beverages in the house, so I know he's not drinking. Is it possible that his food is fermenting in his digestive tract?
He's been teething for a solid 6 months. He also grinds his teeth, sometimes grabbing rocks from the garden to grind on.
He is hale and hearty otherwise, breastfed and on table foods. Mellow and growing nicely.

Any ideas?

Elizabeth/Hansen's Mom

Have you noticed any diaper rash on your son's bottom or a white coating in his mouth? He may have a yeast problem. It sounds like he's exhibiting signs of a vitamin/mineral deficiency too, with all the sand and garden gobbling. Are you using any nutritional supplements? He'd probably be getting them through your breast milk, which would be a good thing.

Hi, Elizabeth.

Listen to Cheezi. C-RS was my first thought as well. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.

You need to see a competent holistic physician in your area to sort this out and resolve it. See the holistic practitioners archive to get started on the trail of the best one for this.

Let us know what you learn and how he does.

Walt

Cheezi,
I haven't noticed white in his mouth, but he used to have recurring diaper rash. It didn't respond to yeast medicines, so I chalked it up to sensitive skin. He has outgrown it.
As for the vit/min deficiency I wondered about that too. Dr. says his blood count is great. I did get lax about taking my vites, though, and have been meaning to get back to them. Your comments have given me the boot to get to the co-op and stock up.
Thanks for the tips--will look into the yeast thing. The hangover breath is gone now, but how wierd that was!

Elizabeth
