Constipation, Diet & Healing

Namaste everyone...

I have been sick for three years. I am currently being treated by Dr. Bielski in NYC, a specialist in cases that are difficult to diagnose and treat. He is treating me for parasites (giardia & endolimax nana), yeast/mold (IgG and IgA positive for many strains of candida and others), and unhealthy bacteria (klebsiella pneumonia, hafnia alvae, enterobacter cloacae, bacillus species, alpha/gamma haemolytic strep). Symtpoms are constipation, faitigue, gas, bloating, brain fog, muscle/joint weakness, insomnia, depression, etc. We are using a combination of high doses of antifungal and antibiotic drugs, herbs, probiotics, liver supporting supplements, diet, bodywork, and stress reduction.

I feel like I am making some progress, but there are two issues particularly (which are related) that I'm struggling with.

1) Diet
I find it nearly impossible to follow a grain/starch/sugar free diet. When I eat the large amounts of meat, nuts, and fat that are necessary to sustain my energetic and caloric needs in the absence of carbs, the contipation becomes intolerable and I lose weight rapidly (I am already 15 pounds underweight). I also seem to have trouble digesting beef, chicken and turkey...especially in large amounts. All I'm left with is fish and vegetables, which never seems like enough and often leaves me unsatisfied and feeling weak. Dr. Bielski said it was okay to add whole grains (brown rice, oatmeal, millet, quinoa, amaranth etc.) and I have also added sprouted rye bread and some yeast/wheat free breads (rye, spelt). This is better but I worry that I am "sabotaging" the healing process by possibly feeding the critters in my gut. I suffer from being exposed to so much information...much of it conflicting...like the SCD folks who think that even a trace of complex carbs/starch will send the body into reaction vs. someone like Paul Pitchford (author of Healing with Whole Foods) who recommends alternative grains and vegetables make up 70-80% of the diet. It's so confusing...I want to trust my body but I'm afraid I'll make the wrong decision.

2) Constipation
This is a persistent and exasperating issue. I have not been able to find any protocol which promotes healthy, regular BMs. Most of the recommended products cause more harm than good - either constipating me further or irritating my digestion even further. I just read the "withholding" protocol and would like to try it. What is the proper brand/dosage of MO for an adult? And will methyl cellulose (Citrucel, Permavite) have the same effects as psyillium? Metumucil has never agreed with me.

I came across the article on bracing and nearly fell off my chair. I have been writing about that in my journal recently, even using that same term, and I now realize that this probably a more significant factor in my constipation than anything else. I am constantly holding my stomach in tight, as if "bracing" for an inevitable attack or protecting myself from the world around me. I also clench and hold my hips and low back, and restrict/control my breath so that it is shallow and irregular...often not reaching the lower parts of the abdomen. I am doing SR (not certified yet) and I know that will help...but I'm hoping for a solution that will help me have regular movements in the meantime. I'm particularly concerned because I'm taking harmful drugs that I don't want sitting in my body for too long.

I'm very glad I discovered this site. I've known intuitively from the beginning the this dis-ease is not just phsyical in origin. The emotional, psychological, karmic/spiritual and physiological elements are inexorably intertwined...and they must all be attended to in order to heal. I look forward to sharing this process with all of you.

All Love

Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm glad you found this site too :-) Sounds like you've already come a long way and I hope your success continues. When I was healing a few years ago, I had a lot of trouble with constipation as well. The doctor gave me different supplements for it and they seemed to work but I didn't want to become dependent on supplements for bowel movements. One thing that really helped me was eliminating my food sensitivies. Another thing that helped was recommended by an iridologist. She told me to take a tablespoon of olive oil before going to bed and then in the morning to drink a large glass of warm lemon water. It did help. Another thing that helped were some yoga positions designed for that purpose (you can find them by searching the net) and also giving myself an abdominal massage before getting out of bed each morning.

Good luck,
Barbara

First i want to tell you Great, your on the right thinking and have a Higher Power inside your body that is Assisting you and Guiding you Intuitively. You also have symptoms that will get worse when you over load on the wrong foods. [the key then is not to beat yourself, just get back on track] You also are aware of your thoughts now and can change the chattering mind when it tries to go to the illness, instead of the solutions to life. It's great you can catch them and say- NO i'm not going there, Yes i'm in Soulutions and Yes I Do Have the Guidence from Internal and the board folks [are part of that piece perhaps] and Yes I can Do It because I'm not doing it by my old self, but a New Strength;[ New Tools! Don't allow the mind to give up before it starts a thing and leave Fear behind!
There are lots of roads to the same place and none of them wrong, you will know thru trial and error or intitively and you can get well, Yes Know that you Can and Are moving into Total Wholeness Now! Your one of those people who are going to move into doing the next best thing for your true self! We are Never the same as yesterday [regardless of the problem] if your in Solution then Ever Minuet Will Be a New One, so Know that Your Moving in the Right Direction; Listen now to people and feel it out with yourself and use your past expierence and you'll know the next step!

Felt Affirming the Truth was important for you in your healing!
Personally i feel adding the grains you mentioned and taking it slow, the key is the amounts of things. Try one grain a day and if adding two different types of grains in one day then you might not be as in tune to what it is doing, if anything to you; I would watch out on the spelt though and the Rye, unless sprouted; Best on the Brown Rice [maybe soak overnight even] and the millet, amaranth and teff; Maybe small meals more often works for your body type, so that when you eat, your not eating everything in site from being so hungry-ha! I probably needed to hear that-ha! You'll know honey! Trust!

It is amazing how the mind has such a memory of being so ill in the past and then when we have some symptoms the fear and the past and future projections can really keep us going in a cycle! Not You and Keeping On the Track! Gathering the Tools!

Just wondering if you have tried black sesame seeds? According to TCM, black sesame seeds are THE most effective cure for constipation. And I've seen with my own eyes how my mother's chronic, severe constipation was cured in a matter of days--2-3 days, I believe.

Additionally, cooked whole grains such as spelt or sprouted wheat eaten with sauted leafy greens are also very effective. Hope this helps!

The WFM chain carries it (if yours doesn't, you can order it); for a lower price, try a well-stocked Asian/Chinese store where real Chinese shop, and ask the store people to assist you. Hope this helps.

Also, I'd like to point out....

Black sesame helps with the symptoms of constipation, so you have to eat it everyday to get regular, daily BM. To fix the cause of this problem, life style changes such as eating whole foods, exercise, and relaxation/SR are the long-term cure.

Hi, Chris.

First, you need to become an expert in Leaky Gut Syndrome. Share that expertise with your doc and start dealing with it at once. SR is the mnost important of the "wellness" things you need to do to resolve LGS so you are already working in the right direction. Use the glossary and then the archives for any unfamiliar terms. Start with the home page article for the LGS.

NOTHING you would do to heal LGS would interfere with what you and your doc are already doing.

ANY kind of fiber you can tolerate will work if used as the protocol describes.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

Thanks for your reply Dr. Stoll.

As far as I know my doctor assumes I do have LGS and will eventually address that. At this point we're working on the pathogenic organisms that contributed to the condition in the first place. I wonder what you think of the Great Smokies Intestinal Permeability test for Leaky Gut? I've had it two or three times over the course of this illness, and each time it's come up negative. Is that useful information or is the test somehow inaccurate?

Thanks,

Chris

Terri-Lynn

Thank you for your words of support. Sometimes I feel as if I'm alone in my belief that I intuitively know what's best for me...especially when that information conflicts with "conventional wisdom"(which it often does!) I usually get into the most trouble and discomfort when I ignore those inner voices in favor of following a concept or idea I picked up somewhere. The fear is that I can't trust myself. In fact, I can...more than anything or anyone else.

Namaste
Chris

Hi ya Chris

I know what you mean. I had that experience just recently. Of not having faith in self and not trusting that everything will be alright in the end. The answer came to me crystal clear. Lack of faith in self. Does it improve with time, age, or experience? I just dont know. I truly hope so.

Your inner voice sounds strong, or at least you seem to hear it clearly. Pay more attention to it, experiment with it if you will, and see where it takes you.

Hi Chris,

1-2 tablespoon(s) black sesame seeds daily is OK. It's best to soak the seeds for several hours, dry them, lightly pan roaste them (you can do a large batch and store them in the freezer afterwards). Also, grind them up into a meal in a spice grinder (or blender) right before serving helps digestion.

Thanks, Chris.

These tests are still pretty crude and have many false negatives. Still, the clinical picture is the most accurate.

Hope this helps.
