Need Help - Treating Children With Reflux Naturally

My 3 year old daughter has been on Zantac now for 4 months. If I even stop giving it to her for a day, she starts coughing (especially at night) again and she says her throat is burning.

she hasn't had a burium test to really determine that she has Reflux - her Dr. diagnosed her without one.

I'm just not comfortable continuing to give her this medicine. I want to help cure her, not just put a bandaid so to speak on her symptoms.

I appreciate any advice on treatment. Thank you.

What is your child's diet like? Has she always had this problem or did it crop up more recently? There are acids in many foods that people commonly think help GERD that actually exacerbate it. I would give her some liquid acidophilus a few times a day and maybe some enzymes to aid with her digestion, so her stomach doesn't make so much acid. I'm not sure of the safety of enzymes in kids, maybe Walt could comment on that, but I know liquid acidophilus is safe. It has other health benefits, too. Can you give us a little more info on her lifestyle? Anything stressful going on like a move or divorce or loss of pet?

Hi, Katherine.

Listen to Stephanie.

GRJ would help more than anything you are using for temporary relief (see the GERD archives). Remember that one of the most common causes of death in children this age is drinking lye, gasoline, kerosene, etc. So the sensation of the GRJ will not deter her unless you approach it with trepidation. Take a teaspoon every day for a few days so you have an idea what it feels like. The sensation very quickly becomes less intense.

Remember that her real problem is LGS and C-RS and until you deal with that this is as good as it gets. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then the home page and the archives until you begin to understand what is going on.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
