WALT.. WHAT IS FOCAL ACTIVE COLITIS? PLEASE RESPOND SOON

Posted by Michelle on September 25, 2003 at 09:18:00:

Hi Walt.

I have posted before. I have IgA Deficiency and many gut related problems, most notably chronic diarrhea.

Just had a colonoscopy and found out that my sigmoid colon was mildly inflamed without any ulcers. The gastro doc said it for sure was not UC but could possibly be Crohns but just was not sure.

Well, the gastro nurse called to tell me the results as she knew I was quite nervous about it and she told me that my biopsy came back FOCAL ACTIVE COLITIS in the sigmoid colon. He biopsied other areas also...
Terminal Ileum.. Normal
Right Side of Colon... Normal
Rectum.. Normal
Basically every other area of the gut was normal on biopsy except for the sigmoid region..

He also did an upper endo and said my esophagus, stomach and dueduenom (not sure of correct spelling) were normal. He biopsied in these areas looking for Celiac and H Pylori and both were negative.

Questions..

What is focal active colitis? I read somewhere that it can be related to infectious processes and in little cases, a Crohns precursor. Can you explain to me what this is? I am pretty scared about it.

The weird thing about this.. Two weeks before my colonscopy, my bowels were great! I had totally formed stools and was only going once or twice daily which was an absolute miracle for me. Then, JUST the day before I started the prep for the Colonscopy, my intestines started to totally rumble and sound like a tornado. I did not get any diarrhea with this. Only multiple formed stools. Then, I did the prep the next day and realized that my body was really "reacting" to the prep. What I mean is I was going more and more than usual with this and the morning of the colonoscopy, my intestines felt rare and they hurt. I also felt dizzy and really tired.

Your thoughts on any of this and especially about the focal active colitis diagnosis would be great. I am so confused with all of this.

Also, I have really made an effort to practive SR faithfully and have been doing so for about six months. But, I guess only about a month would I consider it to be faithful.

I have removed ALL sugar in my diet and limiting the carbs also.

You need to visit an IBD specific board and ask this question. There are tons of crohn's and colitis type boards out there. Hope you don't have IBD.

Best of luck.

Hi, Michelle.

The only guarantee is that you have LGS that has not yet involved your entire gut. If you repeated the colonoscopy you would find that the site that was inflammed the last time would have healed and another site would have shown up.

You REALLY have to get serious about the SR and getting whatever you are doing certified; also starting aerobics so that you have all 3 of the legs of the stool working together.

You do not have much time to get this reversed before you have one of the full blown problems (Crohn's UC, etc.)-- no more than a year----and this will take a year to reverse.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thanks for the response.

I will do exactly as you have suggested.

But, could you do me a huge favor and explain what focal active colitis actually is? I know that it should not matter in the sense that it comes from my IgA Deficiency, leaky gut, and severe bracing problems.

But, I guess for me, knowledge is power and I would really like to know exactly what focal active colitis is? Currently, my sigmoid area feels very crampy and if I try to eat, liquid D comes on instantly. The strange thing is I was perfectly fine A DAY before starting the colon prep.

But, if you could explain in medical terms what this biopsy diagnosis is, I would really appreciate it.

Also, is there AN EXACT diet that I should follow during all of this? The exercise stuff is going to work out well because I just joined a fitness club and I plan on doing a lot of laps in the swimming pool on a regular basis along with some jogging on the track.

Anyway, if you could just medically tell me what the heck this Focal Active Colitis is,I would really appreciate it. Is it considered an Inflammatory bowel? Thanks...

Thanks, Michelle.

Anytime the suffix "itis" is attached to a word it means inflammation.

This diagnosis is just an early case of more generalized case like Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis.

So far as diet is concerned, the WFD is what I would start with and then start testing the common foods to exclude by testing: wheat first ,then dairy, etc.

Hope this helps.
