Digestive Enzymes Forever?

Dr. Stoll,

I've been trying your 3-legged approach to good health now for about 4 months. I eat mostly whole foods, exercise nearly every day and do SR twice a day (got a wonderful tape from a biofeedback therapist and I think it's really working). Everything is feeling better, in general - I'm sleeping better, PVCs are lessened quite a bit, I have more energy. But my stomach is STILL messed up! After I eat, I feel bloated and belch and belch and belch! I've been trying digestive enzymes, and they make a huge difference. But does this mean I have to take them from now on? Is it safe? Will my body stop producing these enzymes? Thank you for your help!

Dear Kathy,

Congratulations on your progress since progress it IS.

Everyone's chronic symptoms disappear at different rates.

Use your bodymind as your own personal laboratory. If the enzymes help, use them. Every 3 months try reducing the dosage to see if you are starting to make your own again.

Your body stops making the enzymes because of the LGS. Depending on your age, you should restart making your own within a few months of doing what you have been doing and your present reported progress.

I would say you were right on track with what I would expect from what you are doing---perhaps a little ahead.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

40 years ago, when I got interested in nutrition as a kid, I read Adelle Davis' recommendation that older people take digestive enzymes before meals, since the production of digestive enzymes declines with age. I filed that away to remember when I got "older" (which didn't take long-- happened while I blinked my eyes a few times)and have now been taking digestive enzymes for several years. Does your suggestion to Kathy mean that you don't think it's necessary for older people to take digestive enzymes? Is the decline in diges enzyme production Adelle Davis referred to juar a sign of poor health?

I'm afraid the tape isn't for sale anywhere; my biofeedback therapist made it for me. Do you have the "Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook?" There's a section on "Autogenics" and that is basically what my tape is, an autogenics training tape. You go through every muscle group with such commands as "My feet are heavy, warm and relaxed" or "My thighs are heavy, warm and relaxed." You could search for an Autogenics tape or consult with a biodfeedback therapist. Good luck, I just LOVE my tape!!

Hi, Ann.

Statistically, 70% of the people over 70 have insufficient digestive enzymes for optimal health; 60% over 60; 50% over 50 and so on down to 20% over 20. Whether this is due to chronic illness or simple aging, I don't think anyone knows.

The best way for the individual is for them to use their bodyminds as their own personal testing laboratory and see if they feel better using them for a few months.

It is true that the healthier one keeps themselves, the more likely they are to make more enzymes. The whole bodymind works together.

Good Question!

Walt
