2.5 year-old son

Hello. My son has dropped from the 75 percentile to the bottom 5th percentile (from 6 months to 2.5 years old) as far as weight is concerned. He has no appetite and thus any food he intakes is at the "hand-fed while being distracted" mechanism by his parents. His bm's are infrequent and usually appear very soft in consistency/olive green in color/with some undigested food present. The odor is quite bad. Otherwise, my son is cognitively/affectively developing fine. Surprisingly, he is not lethargic nor withdrawn due to his low calorie intake. Our gastro specialist will be doing an endoscope and biopsy of his small intestine this week to determine if our son is experiencing Celiac's Disease. If lab results return negative, what else may we consider in this situation as a possible etiology?? Thanks much.

You mentioned a few things that make sense....
"Hand fed while being distracted" ie, I take that as he CAN eat just perhaps gains attention if being "hand fed"...(This is not said in a sarcastic way, but it's common that many children seek attention this way)
Infrequent BM's: Makes sense...he isn't eating a lot.
Developing Fine: This says it all. He has energy, is thriving... he may just be normalizing to HIS body type.
I would not worry. He'll eat when he's hungry, barring the test results come out negative.
Signed, "seasoned mom" :)

many people with celiac's also have Type 1 diabetes, I hope this has been ruled out.

Also, he could be eating non-food- my son got horrible smelling feces from eating crayons.

If your son is healthy otherwise and appears to be running, playing, etc., I don't think I would be too concerned yet. He isn't going to poop a lot if he's not eating a lot. The age he is at is the prime age for "Grazing" I know I always wondered what my kids were living on at thay age. They wouldn't eat....they would "Graza" here and there. Drove me crazy until the 3rd one. Then I finally realized they will eat when they are hungry. Is he drinking too much, such as milk and juices that is supressing his appetite? The only thing I would question is the smell of the bm. Possibly parasites?

Is he drinking milk? I've heard that greenish stools can sometimes be a sign of lactose intolerance. It may also be that the digestive system is slow, creating the "rancid" smelling BM. Maybe encourage him to drink more water so things "flush" through faster so to speak.

Hi, G.

Listen to Linda, Lindsey, Ann and Michele.

My dog loves to be hand fed as well!

If this were my kid, I would stop hand feeding, totally eliminate dairy for a month's trial and start learning about dysbiosis, LGS and C-RS (archives).

Starting probiotics might just eliminate his symptoms pretty quick (a week of so).

Let us know what you learn.
