Abdominal wall strain???

Hi Dr Stoll. An odd thing happened happened to me last Nov. and thought Id ask you about this and get your opinion.
I have always had a problem with constipation and straining. Last Nov. I was in a rush, and strained REALLY hard to 'go'. When I stood up, I had immediate abdominal pain. I was in bed for a week. Abdomen was SO tender it couldnt be touched, had to sleep flat on my back the pai was so intense. I could barely walk. I called the emrgency room and talked to an intern, he suggested I pulled my abdominal wall straining. Ya think??? On the 7th day I prayed for it to stop. By the next mkorning it was completely gone, BUT when I had a mivement thereafter for awhile, it hurt briefly in 1 spot on my left lower side, which is odd because when I was hurting that week, whenever I passed gas, (Im assuming it moves along the intestine)when it reached this same spot, it KILLED just for a second till it 'went by' so to speak. Any explanation for what I could have done? Thanks ever so much. By the way your book was excellent.

Can people who have a particular sensitivity to Mercury get LGS? I read that low level Mercury poisoning, from fillings etc, cause digestion, intestinal and immune system problems

Hi, Patti Anne.

Thanks for your kind words about my book.

I think your intern was right!

By the way, no one should EVER strain at stool. The gentle reminder you got is really mild considering the serious complications you can get from this (Diverticulitis and hemorrhoids being just two of them.)

You will need to break the habit by waiting to go to stool until you fear you will not be able to get there in time. THEN go and you will have a movement without straining. Since you are constipated anyhow, you will not have to worry about soiling yourself.

In the long run, you need to do something about your LGS to stop having the constipation. In the short run, you might follow the suggestions in the homepage article about constipation or go to the archives about that subject.

Let us know how you do. If you continue to strain, it could take your poor muscle months to heal itself.
