colon cleanse?

Dr. Stoll,
How do you feel about colon cleansing through suplemental products or fasting, juicing, etc? Is it true we can store pounds of fecal matter for years or is this a bunch of bunk?
There seems to be varying opinions on this matter so, naturally, I wanted to hear it from the real health expert!
Thanks, Mary

I was wondering this too. I read something about people having huge worms in them that come out during certain cleansing. It really sounded so far fetched to me. sort of like a comedy routine, I mean they were talking about virtually hundreds of worms. long ones too! I have heard that people have impacted fecal matter. What's the story on that??? Lee

Hi, Lee and Mary.

Several times, within the past few years, I have directly addressed this problem and what I had to (reluctantly) learn about it many years ago. I hope RHJ can work his magic and find them for us.

In short, material CAN be retained in the colon for at least 15 years (professional experience with xrays and symptoms).

If one is having a lot of colon problems, it might be worth while to see a local colon therapist and see what happens.

I'm so glad someone brought up this subject. For years I've believed (and practiced)Dr. Bernard Jensen's and V.E. Irons colon cleanse program. Saw the awful pictures in their books about the stuff that comes out.....

Then one day I heard a well known doctor say on his radio program that this was all a bunch of huey because the lining of the colon constantly renews itself - sloughs off the old one every 24 hours or so (not sure about the exact timeframe) leaving a nice pink new one every time. Because of this there is NO way anything can get stuck in there especially not for years!

Well, I was not convinced. But since then I have seen the inside of colons on TV shows when they place a small camera inside the colon to look for polyps, cancer etc. and yes those colons are pink! Is it because they have been thoroughly cleansed before exposing them to the camera?

Well, maybe you can shed some light on this, Dr. Stoll.

Thanks!
Rosemarie

Hi, Rosemarie.

This doc is parroting what he was taught in medical school 40 years ago (maybe even now). It is what I was taught as well.

I believed it till, during the first 10 years of my practice, I had a patient come to me with the history that, following a barium enema examination 15 years before, she started having a very sharp pain in her right side nearly every day. At that time, I only knew conventional medicine but I did decide to repeat her BE (You can imagine the trouble I had getting her to do AGAIN what she saw as the original cause of her problem.)

To make a long story short, the castor oil purging necessary for a good BE is pretty drastic. The day after the purging [before the new xrays], she brought to me a spike of solidified barium about 6 inches long that she had passed with her purging. This had to have been in there for all those years IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE LINING TOTALLY REPLACES ITSELF IN THE COLON EVERY 18 HOURS!

She never had another symptom after passing that spike.

NOW, you tell me! If I had not had that experience, I am not sure that I would STILL believe that this could happen--but it DID. Barium is never a normal part of the colonic condition. It HAD to have come from the first xray series.

Why not post this to the doc's 'site who thinks he already knows?

Walt
