Anything I can eat while I have diarrhea?

Posted by Nathalie on July 08, 2000 at 15:25:19:

I recently (4 days ago) had a pilonidal cyst removed. It was stitched up and the doctor gave me two medications (Ciprofloxacin and Novonidazol I believe) to fight infection. After a day or two of nothing, perhaps due to the Tylenol 3 which apparently causes some constipation, I developed a rather nasty bout of diarrhea.

The doctor took me off the Cipro, but I am now unsure of what to 'eat' until this diarrhea is gone. I haven't 'eaten' in a few days, mainly just fruit juice and jello. I'm constantly aching, tired, headachy and having lots of muscle and joint pain; is it healthy to stop eating entirely until the diarrhea resolves itself?

I'm sorry if this is covered in the archives somewhere, but I could not find it and sitting at my computer desk to search through all this stuff is, as you might imagine, rather difficult at the moment.

Thanks in advance for your help.

How about the BRAT diet?

I have always been told when diarrhea comes to eat the "BRAT" diet - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.

These foods are mild and easy to digest. Of course, this may be outdated info now, and it isn't considered perfect whole foods, so...

Millet (a grain like brown rice or barley) is the reported in some dietary books to be the easiest food to digest of all whole foods. I have found it apparently both easy to digest and completely digestable.

I stay away from applesauce and bananas to avoid sugar (as part of a program to kill candida).

Nathalie,

First you need to start using hot soaks to prevent the infection that the doc is trying to prevent by prophylactc antibiotics (A practice, by the way that has been proven ineffective by all the research and is still done by intentionally ignorant surgeons.) THEN, you need to get off the antibiotic that has destroyed your most important defence against ALL outide organisms (your gut ecology). THEN, yoiu need to replace that ecology by taking at least 6 billion (per dose) acidophilus (4 times a day) one day and the same number of acidbifidus on the alternate day. Accept only Metagenics or Klair products (found in the freezer of your healthfood store.

In the meantime, you need to stay on clear liquids (anything you can see through). Done this way, you will have results in a few days.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thanks for your reply! I feel honoured that you took the time to answer my question. I think I may have gotten your reply a bit late though; I am off the Cipro, and this thing seems to have resolved itself already, or is on its way to doing so. Is it still necessary to take the Acidophilus and Acidobifidus supplements? Also, I have noticed a brand of milk at my grocery store that has acidophilus.. would this work also? Thanks again for your reply!

Hi, Nathalie.

For this to clear up just by your getting off the Cipro, You have to have a pretty healthy colonic ecology already and nothing else should be needed. However, the NEXT time your doc puts you on ANY antibiotic, you will be more likely to have problems. You may be able to prevent those problems by using the acidophilus/bifidus as soon as you start the antibiotics and until you are off them for a few days. You will have to get them fresh so don't get them now.

The acidophilus milk may be helpful for maintaining your colonic ecology, while you are well, but would do nothing (spit in the ocean) for treating such a problem.

Walt
