chronic diarrhea

Posted by Lynn on September 11, 2000 at 12:27:06:

Hi. I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome for about 20 years. I always was able to manage it so it never affected me severely. My main problem was constipation. Never diarrhea. Now, for the past year... I have suddenly changed to chronic, severe diarrhea. So severe at times that I will not eat and I can still get it. They have tested me for other problems and nothing ever was diagnosed. My doctor says it is irritable bowel but I do not understand why I have changed so drastically to having severe diarrhea. My question is does anyone that has irrible bowel have similar situations as mine? Can symptoms change like this? Also, is there any other physicians that I can go to other than a gastro doctor to help me with this? I am new to this site and I will try to investigate and research as much as I can on my own. In the meantime, if anyone could help me, that would be great. I am 25 years old and I live in the Minneapolis area. I am at my wits end with this diarrhea. I feel like I cannot go anywhere without worrying about when it will strike next. I am a college student and I am so afraid it will attack while I am in class. That is a big worry for me. Thanks

my roommate had/has similiar problems which stem from what's called celiac's disease. basically it means she's allergic to wheat flour. which, by the way, is in nearly EVERYTHING you eat. You might want to try cutting wheat flour out of your diet for about two weeks.. my roommate tried it and is feeling great!

by the way, many doctors do not even know about this disease or believe that it's real. there is a lot of info on the web about this..

good luck!

Hi, Lynn

The intestinal symptoms you have are not merely a result of a problem in your gut; these types of problems are but a part of an intricately woven web of inadequate balance in your body. It is true that this same syndrome can manifest as constipation or diarrhea. The root causes of the IBS are what you need to deal with. You commented about the fear of having diarrhea in class, "That is a big worry for me." Worry is probably affecting your condition much more than you realize.

While you are looking around on the website dig into the arhives - here are some suggested topics to enter in the search window: IBS (of course), diarrhea, LGS, bracing, SR [that's skilled relaxation]. And look on the homepage at the articles Dr. Stoll has written and included for our education.

I am working on dealing with the causes of my own health problems; diarrhea and IBS type problems have plagued me. I do have a favorite herbal remedy I'll share with you but this is just a bandaid so please try to learn more. I use extract or tincture of Slippery Elm to slow down my intestinal motility. Take it straight if you wish but it'll taste like a shot of whiskey that way. I put mine into warm organic peppermint tea (not steaming). The warm liquid seems to help it get into my system better, it tastes better this way and its a balancing tea done this way as the peppermint has soothing gastro effects also. (And you need the fluids)

And I do recommend Dr. Stoll's book, which you can find out how to order on this 'site. It gives a good and easy to understand overview of why chronic illnesses are rampant and what we can do to reverse things.

Thanks very much Amy. I will also look into Celiac Disease. I know my diet is a major factor in my problems. Thanks much.

Hi,

In order to get a true diagnosis for Celiac Disease, you would need to have an intestinal biopsy. I agree with Amy, except that I think all doctors know about Celiac Disease and you have to eliminate more than just "wheat flour" to help yourself. Do some Internet searches on Celiac and find out! You say you have had IBS for 20 years and you are only 25, that means you've had this since 5 years old (and probably even younger but the doctors didn't pay attention.) This has gone on long enough! I'd say checking into the possibilty of Celiac Disease would be well worth your while. If you do, please let us know what you find out!

Dr Pepper uses Cayenne...

Well, I used cayenne pepper caps on my hounds whenever they
have a problem and it works fast. I have one who has
sensitivities and had a situation where both had the runs
for 2 weeks. I was affraid they might explode but was
despirate so gave it a try and it seemed to work as soon as
they swallowed it.

Cayenne sounds like it would do damage and some people
claim their butt burns when they eat hot foods but I have
read that cayenne can heal the digestive system. If you are
sensitive to hot foods I would do what I did when I made
cayenne pepper Nose Drops and use VERY little. It made my
eyes tear the first time but I may have been tense or maybe
I got used to it since I was able to make it stronger after.
It was amazing how fast it broke up the deep sinus
congestion I had.

Hi, Lynn.

Typical history of the progression of severe LGS. It will only get worse without your dealing with the causes.

See the archives for LGS, stress, SR, wellness.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Thanks, Amy.

Could be though not likely. This is one of the "worse" things that I alluded to as is Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, etc. I just did not want to alarm her.

You took over that responsibility for me so I guess it was meant to be. Hopefully Lynn will take this in the spirit in which is was intended and get busy reversing it.

Namaste`

Walt
