Attn: Robert McFerran - diet for diverticulitis

Posted by Sara on December 29, 1998 at 02:07:58:

Bob,

A good friend of mine has diverticulitis and recently had a flare-up and was hospitalized for four days. Her doctor has her on a special diet for it, which she says is really strange (although she didn't tell me what it consisted of). What I've heard of her doctor, I have serious doubts about whatever diet she would put her on. What diet would you recommend? Would the metabolic diets be appropriate for this condition?

Thanks,
Sara

Sara,

This is beyond my area of expertise and I'll be interested in what Dr. Stoll has to say.

I think the Elimination diet would be the easiest thing on her system right now and would certainly not add to the inflammatory activity running throughout her body right now.

Bob

Hi, Sara.

Diverticulitis is one of the advanced complications of LGS. NO ONE can have it without first having LGS for many years.

SO, doing what would get rid of LGS is one of the first things for anyone with diverticulitis to do.

THEN, I would follow an elimination/provocation diet (a la McFerran) to try to get quick results for symptoms.

Finally, keeping stools soft and easy to move would help in any case. See the article about constipation on the homepage to know how to do that.

Walt
