Question about Candida test and LGS test results

Posted by Keith on November 30, 2000 at 14:30:04:

I recently had the comprehensive digestive stool analysis done and the lactulose mannitol intestinal permeability test done. I spoke to my pr today on the phone and she said the intestinal permiability test showed I DIDN'T have LGS, but the CDSA showed i have a large overgrowth of candida and some other stuff that we didn't have a chance to go over on the phone. The candida level was high at 16. My question is how can I NOT have LGS and have such a high candida level. does this sound strange? Should I repeat the lactulose mannitol test? All of my symptoms point to having LGS. Is it possible to have an overgrowth of candida and ather bacteria and not have LGS? my next appointment is on tuesday. She said she was going to check into those results because they didn't sound right to her. I have felt pretty bad lately with the foggy head, fatigue, digestive troubles etc. any insight from anyone is greatly appreciated.

Seems strange to me that you would have such a high level of candida and no leaky gut. To me, tests aren't as important as what your body is telling you. Listen to you body. Would be interesting to know how your doctor explains it. Let us know.

Hi, Keith.

Listen to Barbara (Thanks, Barbara!)

Your doc is correct to have the test repeated. It is still so new that it has a significant % of false negatives--but not of false positives.

Let us know what you find out.

Walt

I spoke briefly with my Dr. today. she called Great Smokies and they told her that it was unusual but the result wasn't necessarily wrong. they seem to think I have dysbiosis in the large intestine with the candida but my small intestine isn't that bad yet.(no LGS) I think I do have LGS because of the severity of my symptoms, plus I've been dealing with this problem for four years now. Isn't that plenty of time for LGS to develop? I'm also sensitive to many perfumes and stuff. Don't you have to have LGS for this to happen or can candida alone cause it. I'm confused about everything. hopefully I'll know more soon.

Hi, Keith.

One of the adages of medicine is that you treat the person and not the test. IF the lab stepped back and looked at your entire condition, they would speak differently. However, that is the physician's job.

Nearly every person with chemical sensitivities (perfumes and stuff) has them BECAUSE of LGS. When you look at your history of MCS, candida AND dysbiosis there is NO WAY that you do not have LGS.

The concept of LGS is so new to the practitioners that the tests for it in the lab are necessarily crude. Those results MUST be taken in conjunction with the clinical condition of the patient!

Remember: "To a hammer, everything looks like a nail." To a laboratory technician, lab test results are the be-all and end-all.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thanks Dr. Stoll (nmi)
