diverticulitis-disease of the Western world

Hello,

Just thought I would pass on what I learned through a little research I did recently. My mother was diagnosed with diverticulitis 2 years ago. The doctor told her she would be fine as long as she didn't eat anything with seeds. Two years later she had emergency surgery when a divertuculum(sp?) ruptured. She had peritonitis and could have died.
Here are some points I wanted to let everyone know that might be interested.

1. Diverticulitis DOES NOT exist in countries that eat a mostly plant based diet (Asia/Africa)
2. The doctor's plan of prevention for my mother actually eliminated (for her) most fruits and vegetables.
3. Obesity, low fiber diet, not enough water, eating processed foods, being sedentary are all risk factors. (In short, most people in the United States)
4. This disease is just another in a list of diseases that people eating the standard Western diet bring upon themselves.
5. If she had been told that constipation is the worst thing for this condition, she probably would not have a colostomy right now.

It is such a shame, and just another example of what Dr. Stoll is teaching me. The medical industry would put itself out of business if some simple explanations for diseases came to light.
I'm so frustrated that not enough people believe in diet as prevention. I was raised by my mother, of course, and was raised on the kind of diet she still eats. I know it is slowly killing her, unfortunately. She also won't listen to a word I say about nutrition, vegetables, high fiber, etc. Anything that doesn't come out of the doctor's mouth is not to be believed.
I have learned so much from having my own health problems, (pvc's), my sister having lymphoma, and now my mother's problems. I just wish I could influence more people to see what is going on. I visit this board so that I can feel validated that I'm not crazy, when everyone in my world makes me feel like I am.

Keep up the good work Dr. Stoll. Thank you for everything you do.

Renee

How interesting. What did he want her to eat? My gran & my aunt both nearly died of this.

See link.

Avoidance of seeds from fruit and vegetables is often recommended by doctors for this condition because they may get lodged in the pouches and cause further inflammation and make the condition even worse.

Aston,

There are other high fibre foods to eat. It's the fibre that is the important thing.

Thanks, Renee.

We have a house guest (nephew) who just had his first attack of diverticulitis, yesterday, while he is here, and he is only 50. I will try to get him to read your note.

A totally preventable problem!

Walt

Renee, I know just what you mean. I have two friends who say they "don't do health" and it's like talking to brick walls. I don't even try any more. When I talked to one of them about toxins, she actually laughed and said "But we're still here aren't we?" She has always got something wrong but she doesn't equate that to her lifestyle and what she puts into her mouth. I really don't feel like even discussing it with her any more. Sad.

You're welcome, Dr. Stoll.
While you're at it, you should have him look at some real pictures of a colostomy so he can know what he might have to look at on his own body. It is not a fun way to have to live.

Renee
